( ضَاقَتْ فَلَمّا اسْتَحْكَمَتْ حَلَقاتُها)

( ضَاقَتْ فَلَمّا اسْتَحْكَمَتْ حَلَقاتُها)

ضَاقَتْ وَوَهْماً قَدْ ظَنَنّا تُفْرَجُ

ضَاقَتْ وَوَهْماً قَدْ ظَنَنّا تُفْرَجُ

It tightened, and when its rings closed fast,

it tightened—we had mistakenly thought it would ease.

قد بُحَّ صوت الحَقِّ في زَمَنِ الخَنا

قد بُحَّ صوت الحَقِّ في زَمَنِ الخَنا

يا ويحنا ساد السفيهُ الأعوجُ

يا ويحنا ساد السفيهُ الأعوجُ

The voice of truth has grown hoarse in an age of depravity.

Alas for us! The crooked fool has come to rule.

رَهْطُ الرُّوَيْبِضَة انْبَروا وتجبّروا

رَهْطُ الرُّوَيْبِضَة انْبَروا وتجبّروا

أنَّ الجَهالةَ منهمُ تتخرَّجُ

أنَّ الجَهالةَ منهمُ تتخرَّجُ

The band of ignorant upstarts stepped forward and grew tyrannical;

indeed, ignorance graduates from their ranks.

والمُفْسِدونَ كَما الأفاعي قد دَنوا

والمُفْسِدونَ كَما الأفاعي قد دَنوا

مِنْ نابِهِمْ سُماً زُعافاً أخْرَجوا

مِنْ نابِهِمْ سُماً زُعافاً أخْرَجوا

And the corrupters have drawn near like snakes;

from their fang they released deadly venom.

بَذروا الفَسادَ بأرْضِنا لا ما اسْتَحوا

بَذروا الفَسادَ بأرْضِنا لا ما اسْتَحوا

وعلى رُؤانا خِلْسَةً قد عَرّجوا

وعلى رُؤانا خِلْسَةً قد عَرّجوا

They sowed corruption in our land—no, they felt no shame.

And stealthily they turned toward our visions.

نثروا القَتامةَ في دُروبِ حياتنا

نثروا القَتامةَ في دُروبِ حياتنا

ما عادَ فيها ما يَسُرُّ ويُبْهِجُ

ما عادَ فيها ما يَسُرُّ ويُبْهِجُ

They scattered gloom along the paths of our lives;

nothing remains there to please or gladden.

اسْتَرخَصوا الأرْدُنَّ دونَ مخافةٍ

اسْتَرخَصوا الأرْدُنَّ دونَ مخافةٍ

فَفَسادُهُم مُسْتَأصِلٌ ومُمَنْهَجُ

فَفَسادُهُم مُسْتَأصِلٌ ومُمَنْهَجُ

They held Jordan cheap, without fear;

for their corruption is all-destroying and systematic.

سُرّاقُ أحلامٍ ومَصّاصوا دَمٍ

سُرّاقُ أحلامٍ ومَصّاصوا دَمٍ

في كُلِّ دَرْبِ نَقيصَةٍ قد أدْلَجوا

في كُلِّ دَرْبِ نَقيصَةٍ قد أدْلَجوا

Thieves of dreams and suckers of blood,

they have journeyed by night down every path of vice.

رُحْماكَ ربّي لا قُنوطَ بَقوْلَتي

رُحْماكَ ربّي لا قُنوطَ بَقوْلَتي

لَكِنَّهُم باعوا الضَّميرَ وعَوّجوا

لَكِنَّهُم باعوا الضَّميرَ وعَوّجوا

Your mercy, my Lord! There is no despair in my words,

but they sold their conscience and made things crooked.

وَطَني سَقوكَ من الكُؤوسِ مَرارَها

وَطَني سَقوكَ من الكُؤوسِ مَرارَها

لا تَبْتئِسْ فالحَقُّ حَتماً أبْلجُ

لا تَبْتئِسْ فالحَقُّ حَتماً أبْلجُ

My homeland, they gave you the cups' bitterness to drink.

Do not be disheartened, for truth is surely radiant.
