البُؤْسُmisery فيهِin him لأننيbecause I فيهِin him أناI
The hand of happiness has cast off this wretched man.
Misery is in him because I myself am in him.

Under the onslaught of groans, his moaning groaned,
And his wailing sobs are an echo of wasting sickness.

Grief-stricken, he has drunk sorrow against his will,
And ill fortune escorted those who brought him joy to burial and eulogized them.

Sickness spread through his clay and his aorta,
So his nerves contracted, then he bent over.

Curled up, forlorn in his well,
As though he were darkness shunned by radiance.

Frost sank its fangs into every part of him;
His innards became a target for calamities' thrusts.

This outcast—his wounds lie in his time;
No time has come to spare him weariness.

The fire of separation bore him far away when he resolved
To set out, if only once, toward his hopes.

His plight baffled solutions, so they sank into mire;
Scorching heat settled in his dwelling and took firm hold.

In his 'where', sorrow established its vaulted hall;
In his 'now', time mustered hardship for him.
