"أوّاهُalas!" تحمِلُنيcarries me إلىto آهيmy sigh
"والآهُand the sigh" تُلقينيcasts me إلىtoward "إيهِgo on!"
“Alas!” carries me to my own “Ah!”
And the “Ah!” casts me toward “Go on!”

كأنيas though I were مِنْamong مَراعيهِits pastures
Sorrow steals through my dwelling, grazing freely.
Alas, alas—as though I were one of its pastures!
ليليmy night ضَريرٌblind قَدَّهُrent it وصَبٌpain
وأناand I am دُموعٌtears فيin مآقيهِits inner eye corners
My night is blind, riven by pain,
and I am tears in the corners of its eyes.
الشِّعرُpoetry دَبَّcrept وشبّand blazed فيin شَجَنيmy grief

Poetry crept and blazed within my grief,
and my burning pangs kindled its rhymes.
شاخَgrew old الرّصيفُthe pavement وشابَand turned gray مَفْرِقُهits hair-parting
إنّيindeed I am الرّصيفُthe pavement بِكُلّwith all ماthat فيهِis in it
The pavement has aged, and its hair-parting has grayed.
Indeed, I am the pavement, with all that is in it.

And I bore it, frailty upon my frailty,
and planted its firm-set mountains in my breast.

فهُوَfor it is العَريفُthe one well versed بِماin what أعانيهِI endure it
And I made it my stride and my compass,
for it is versed in what I endure.
