مُهْجَتيmy heart حَرّىburning والعيونُand the eyes دَواميbleeding
Calamities made me swallow the bitterness of my sickness.
Bitter miseries made me drink the cup of woe,
My heart burns, and my eyes bleed.
My passions were inflamed and my eyes overflow,
أقْفَرَتْgrew desolate مِنْof رغْدease الحياةِlife دياريmy dwellings
ومقاديريand my fates قَدْindeed سَقَتنيgave me to drink أُوامِيmy burning thirst
My dwellings have grown desolate, bereft of life's ease.
My home was made desolate of life's joys,
And my fates have indeed given me my burning thirst to drink.
And the fates gave me only grief to know,
كهشيمٍlike dry stubble تحطّمتْshattered أمنياتيmy wishes
هجَرتنيthey deserted me ماnot نلتُI attained يوماًever مراميmy aim
My wishes shattered like dry stubble.
My hopes were shattered into worthless chaff,
They deserted me; never once did I attain my aim.
My dreams betrayed me and all came to naught,
حَقَنتْنيinjected me الأيّامthe days مَصْلَserum شَقاءٍmisery

The days injected me with a serum of misery.
Fate filled my days with sorrow's bitter draught,
My disappointment cast me into the embrace of my blaze.
Disappointment clasped me in her arms distraught,
شيّعتنيsaw me off النَّكْبَاءُthe crosswind ذاتَon a رصيفٍpavement
عندماwhen قادَتِguided النُّحوسُill fortunes زِماميmy reins
The crosswind saw me off on a pavement,
Misfortunes walked with me down loneliness
When ill fortunes guided my reins.
When fate held my reins and my life besought,
ذاthis سَعيريmy inferno أقامَdwelt بيwithin me وابتدانيand began with me
وعلىand on نعشٍa bier منْهُfrom it كانَwas خِتاميmy end
This inferno of mine dwelt within me and began with me,
My ruin dwelt with me and laid me waste,
And on a bier made of it came my end.
My end was sealed upon my coffin wrought,
إننيindeed I ميْتٌdead لنwill not يطولَlast long عزائيmourning for me
لاno بواكيmourners غيرexcept الثَّرىthe soil لحِماميfor my death
I am indeed dead; mourning for me will not last long.
For I am dead, my mourning will not last,
There are no mourners for my death but the soil.
None shall lament me save the earth I sought,
آهتيmy sigh شاهِديmy headstone وحُزنيand my grief قرينيmy companion
تُربتيmy soil غُربتيmy exile وقبريand my grave ظَلاميmy darkness
My sigh is my headstone, and my grief my companion.
My sighs and sorrow shall keep me company,
My soil is my exile, and my grave my darkness.
My exile, my tomb, my darkness anguish-fraught.
