في كُلِّ نازِلَةٍ خَرّوا لَها سَجَدوا
Worshippers of “regimes”—what number could ever count them?
Worshippers of “regimes”—no count could number them.
At every calamity, they fall prostrate before it.

تُبَّاعُfollowers مَنْthose who رجَحَتْgrew heavier بالسُّحتwith ill-gotten gain كفَّتُهُمْtheir scale-pan
تُبَّاعُ مَنْ رجَحَتْ بالسُّحت كفَّتُهُمْ
أضْحواthey became لَهُمْfor them عَسَسًاnight watchmen فيin بَغيهِمْtheir oppression مَرَدواthey grew hardened
أضْحوا لَهُمْ عَسَسًا في بَغيهِمْ مَرَدوا
Followers of those whose scale-pan grew heavy with ill-gotten gain,
Followers of those whose scale-pan grew heavier with ill-gotten gain.
They became their night watchmen, hardened in aggression.

صُناعُmakers فَبركَةٍfabrication أبْواقُtrumpets منthose who بَطَشواstruck brutally
صُناعُ فَبركَةٍ أبْواقُ من بَطَشوا
قُلوبُهُمtheir hearts حَطبٌfirewood بالفُجْرِwith depravity تَتّقِدُblazes
قُلوبُهُم حَطبٌ بالفُجْرِ تَتّقِدُ
Makers of fabrications, trumpets for those who wield brute force—
Makers of fabrications, trumpets for those who struck brutally.
Their hearts are firewood, set ablaze by depravity.

"لُعابُهُمtheir saliva" هَطِلٌpouring down فيin سُوْحِcourtyards خِسّتهِمْtheir baseness
"لُعابُهُم" هَطِلٌ في سُوْحِ خِسّتهِمْ
كَماlike القَطيعِthe herd بِمَرْعىin the pasture الذُّلِّhumiliation قَدْindeed حُشِدواthey were gathered
كَما القَطيعِ بِمَرْعى الذُّلِّ قَدْ حُشِدوا
Their drool pours in torrents through the courts of their baseness,
Their “saliva” pours down in the courtyards of their baseness.
Like a herd massed in humiliation’s pasture.
Like a herd, they have been massed in the pasture of humiliation.
باعواthey sold نفوسَهُمُtheir souls فيin سوقِthe marketplace سادَتِهِمْtheir masters
باعوا نفوسَهُمُ في سوقِ سادَتِهِمْ
بِئْسَwretched is التِّجارةُthe trade مِمَّنْfrom those who سُحْتَهُمtheir ill-gotten gains حَصَدواthey harvested
بِئْسَ التِّجارةُ مِمَّنْ سُحْتَهُم حَصَدوا
They sold their souls in their masters’ marketplace—
They sold their souls in the marketplace of their masters.
What a wretched trade: they reaped their ill-gotten gain.
Wretched is the trade with those whose ill-gotten gains they harvested!
ماتَتْdied ضمائرُهُمtheir consciences خانُواthey betrayed عَلانيَةًopenly
ماتَتْ ضمائرُهُم خانُوا عَلانيَةً
تَراهُمُyou see them شِيَعًاfactions للفُسْقِtoward wickedness قَدْindeed عَمِدواthey deliberately turned
تَراهُمُ شِيَعًا للفُسْقِ قَدْ عَمِدوا
Their consciences died; openly, they betrayed.

You see them in factions, deliberately bent on depravity.
You see them in factions; they have deliberately turned to wickedness.
مِنْهُمْamong them شُيوخُsheikhs خَنًاobscenity بادتperished شمائلهمtheir virtues
مِنْهُمْ شُيوخُ خَنًا بادت شمائلهم
مُذْsince "شَرْعَنواthey legitimized" الذَّبْحَslaughter قُرْبانًاa sacrificial offering لِمَنْto those whom عَبَدواthey worshipped
مُذْ "شَرْعَنوا" الذَّبْحَ قُرْبانًا لِمَنْ عَبَدوا
Among them are sheikhs of obscenity whose virtues have vanished,
Among them are sheikhs of obscenity, whose virtues have perished,
Since they “legitimized” slaughter as an offering to those they worshipped.

يُعْلونَthey exalt فيin هُبَلٍHubal شُلّتْmay be paralyzed سَواعِدُهُمْtheir forearms
يُعْلونَ في هُبَلٍ شُلّتْ سَواعِدُهُمْ
تاللهِby God قَدْindeed وُئِدواthey were buried alive فيin رِجْسِfilth ماwhat اعْتقَدواthey believed
تاللهِ قَدْ وُئِدوا في رِجْسِ ما اعْتقَدوا
They exalt a Hubal—may their arms be paralyzed!

By God, they were buried alive in the filth of what they believed.

(يَبْغونَهاthey seek it عِوَجًاcrooked) شاهَتْmay be disfigured وُجوهُهُمُtheir faces
(يَبْغونَها عِوَجًا) شاهَتْ وُجوهُهُمُ
الزَّيفُfalsehood دَيْدَنهُمtheir constant habit وشأوُهمْand their aim أودُcrookedness
الزَّيفُ دَيْدَنهُم وشأوُهمْ أودُ
“They seek to make it crooked”—may their faces be disfigured!

Falsehood is their creed, and crookedness their farthest reach.
Falsehood is their habit, and crookedness their aim.
دَسائِسًاintrigues تَحتَunder جُنْحِcover اللَّيلِthe night قَدْindeed نَسَجواthey wove
دَسائِسًا تَحتَ جُنْحِ اللَّيلِ قَدْ نَسَجوا
أوطانَهُمtheir homelands صَلبواthey crucified والغَبْنَand injustice قَدْindeed وَرَدواthey entered
أوطانَهُم صَلبوا والغَبْنَ قَدْ وَرَدوا
Intrigues they wove beneath the wing of night;
They have woven intrigues under the cover of night.
They crucified their homelands and came to grievous loss.
They crucified their homelands and plunged into injustice.
ومِنْهُمُand among them نُخَبٌelites باعواthey sold الوَرىhumankind خُطَبًاspeeches
ومِنْهُمُ نُخَبٌ باعوا الوَرى خُطَبًا
عَنْabout حُرْمَةِthe sanctity الدَّمِّblood فانفَضّواthen they dispersed وماand not اتّأدواthey took their time
عَنْ حُرْمَةِ الدَّمِّ فانفَضّوا وما اتّأدوا
Among them are elites who peddled the people speeches
And among them are elites who sold humankind speeches
On the sanctity of blood, then dispersed without pausing.

يَلهونَthey frolic فيin مَرَجٍchaos لاno شَيءَthing يردَعُهُمْrestrains them

لهْوَfrolicking الضِّباعِthe hyenas إذاwhen ماemphatic particle غابَتِwere absent الأُسُدُthe lions
لهْوَ الضِّباعِ إذا ما غابَتِ الأُسُدُ
They frolic in an open meadow, with nothing to deter them,

Like hyenas at play when the lions are gone.
As hyenas frolic when the lions are absent.
وَخَلْفَand behind أقْدامِthe feet سُلطانٍa ruler طَغىacted tyrannically زَلَفواthey drew near
وَخَلْفَ أقْدامِ سُلطانٍ طَغى زَلَفوا
زَحْفًاcrawling كأنَّهُمُas though they فيin نَعْلِهِhis sandal عُقِدواthey were knotted
زَحْفًا كأنَّهُمُ في نَعْلِهِ عُقِدوا
Behind the feet of a tyrannical ruler they crowd close,
And behind the feet of a tyrannical ruler they drew near,
Crawling—as though they were knotted into his sandal.
