أَنت الفَتى كُلُّ الفَتى
لَوif كُنتَyou were تَفعَلُdoing ماwhat تَقولyou say
لَو كُنتَ تَفعَلُ ما تَقول
You are a young man, every inch a young man,
You are the best of men
if only you did what you say.
If only you did as you say
لاno خَيرَgood فيin كذبِthe lying of الجَواthe generous man (word begins here)
لا خَيرَ في كذبِ الجَوا
دِcompletion of 'the generous man' وَحَبَّذاand how admirable is صِدقُthe truthfulness of البَخيلthe miser
دِ وَحَبَّذا صِدقُ البَخيل
There is no good in the lies of the generous
No good in the lies of the generous
man; and how fine is the miser’s truthfulness!
Better the stinginess of the truthful
ياO بنَson of المُهَلَّبِal-Muhallab حاجَتيmy request
يا بنَ المُهَلَّبِ حاجَتي
عَجِّلhasten فَقَدfor indeed حَضَرَhas arrived الرَّحيلdeparture
عَجِّل فَقَد حَضَرَ الرَّحيل
O son of al-Muhallab, my request—
O son of Al-Muhallab my need
hasten to fulfill it, for departure has come.
Hurry for departure has come
