فَأَبلِغso convey أَباAbu حَفصٍHafs رِسالَةَa message ناصِحٍa well-wisher
أَتَتit came مِنfrom زيادٍZiyad مُستَبيناًclear كَلامُهاits words
So convey to Abu Hafs a well-wisher’s message,
which came from Ziyad, its words clear.
فإِنَّكَfor indeed you مَثلُlike الشَّمسُthe sun لاno سِترَveil دونهاbefore it
فَكيفَso how أَباO Abu حَفصٍHafs عَلَيَّupon me ظَلامُهاits darkness
For you are like the sun, with no veil before it;
how then, Abu Hafs, does its darkness fall upon me?
لَقَدindeed كُنتُI used to أَدعوpray to اللَّهَGod فيin السِرِّsecret أَنthat أَرىI might see
أُمورَthe affairs of مَعَدٍّMa‘add فيin يَدَيكyour two hands نِظامُهاtheir ordering
Indeed, I used to pray to God in secret that I might see
the ordering of Ma‘add’s affairs in your hands.
فَلَمّاso when أَتانيthere came to me ماwhat أَردتُI wished for تَباشَرَتrejoiced together
بَناتيmy daughters وَقُلنَand they said العامُthis year لاno شَكَّdoubt عامُهاtheir year
So when what I wished for came to me, joy spread among
my daughters, who said that this year was surely theirs.
فَإِنيfor indeed I وَأَرضاًtogether with a land أَنتَyou فيهاin it ابنَO son of مَعمرٍMa‘mar
كَمَكَّةَlike Mecca لَمdid not يَطرَبyearn لِأَرضٍfor a land حَمامُهاits doves
For I, in a land where you dwell, Ibn Ma‘mar,
am like Mecca’s doves, which have never yearned for another land.
إِذاif اِختَرتَyou choose أَرضاًa land لِلمَقامِfor residence رضيتُهاI am content with it
لِنَفسيfor myself وَلَمand did not يَثقُلweigh heavily عَلَيَّupon me مُقامُهاdwelling there
If you choose a land to dwell in, I am content with it
for myself, and dwelling there is no burden to me.
وَكُنتُand I used to أُمَنِّيfill with hopes النَّفسَmy soul مِنكfrom you ابنَO son of مَعمَرٍMa‘mar
أَمانيَّhopes أَرجوI hope أَنthat يَتِمَّbe completed تَمامُهاtheir fulfillment
And I used to fill my soul with hopes of you, Ibn Ma‘mar—
hopes I long to see fulfilled in full.
فَلاso may ... not أَكُI be كَالمُجريlike one who races إِلىto رَأسِthe end of غايَةٍa course
يُرَجّيhe hopes for سَماءًrain لَمhas not يُصِبهُreached him غَمامُهاits clouds
So let me not be like one racing to the end of a course,
hoping for rain whose clouds have not reached him.
