وَمَتَى يؤامِر نَفسَهُ مُستَلحياً

وَمَتَى يؤامِر نَفسَهُ مُستَلحياً

في أَن يَجودَ لِذي الرَّجاءِ يَقُل جُدِ

في أَن يَجودَ لِذي الرَّجاءِ يَقُل جُدِ

And whenever he consults himself, seeking advice,

And when he resolves, armed,

About giving generously to one who hopes, he says, 'Give!'

To be generous to one hopeful, he says "Give!"

أَو أَن يَعودَ لَهُ بِنَفحَةِ نائِلٍ

أَو أَن يَعودَ لَهُ بِنَفحَةِ نائِلٍ

يعد الكَرامَة وَالحَياء يَقُل عِدِ

يعد الكَرامَة وَالحَياء يَقُل عِدِ

Or about returning to him with a breath of bounty,

Or to return to him with the breath of one who has attained,

He considers honor and modesty, and says, 'Promise!'

He counts generosity and modesty, he says "Count!"

أَو في الزِّيادَةِ بَعدَ جَزلِ عَطِيّةٍ

أَو في الزِّيادَةِ بَعدَ جَزلِ عَطِيّةٍ

لِلمُستَزيدِ مِن العُفاةِ يَقُل زِدِ

لِلمُستَزيدِ مِن العُفاةِ يَقُل زِدِ

Or about giving more after a lavish gift,

Or in giving more after a generous gift

To one seeking more among the supplicants, he says, 'Give more!'

To one who asks more of the noble, he says "Give more!"
