God completed the creation of humankind; then you were created,

the remainder of God's creation, last of the last.

So you heard only of those who preceded you,

and reached nothing but the ground trodden by hooves.

Are you those who came with ants and young locusts?

Then they took flight, while this form of yours remains flightless.

Who are you, then? We have indeed forgotten who you are.

And your wind—from which of the whirlwinds does it come?

So if the upholders of justice returned your dead

to their rightful place, you would not be buried in graveyards.

So you have, in the land of Najd and its lowlands,

when they divide it justly, not a handspan for anyone to measure.

So rise in humiliation, O elder of Jurm; for only

to a mature man of true worth is it said, 'Rise without humiliation.'

For you are an elder destined to die, and will bequeath

to Quda'ah the legacy of al-Basus and Qashir.
