How long must my heart, through separation, remain wounded?

My eye and eyelid—one sleepless, the other sore.

How often does passion burden me beyond my strength,

while a censor delights in blame and disparagement?

O glance that became the foundation of my longing—or my death,

O fate that bestowed sorrow upon my joy!

O Paradise whose Riḍwān betrayed his pledge,

I endured rejection’s fire when my boon was withheld.

    O full moon, sleeplessness has dragged on and distressed me;

O bough, my song has made the upland flowers weep.

By God, what a heart—how well I have known its passion!

And by God, what an eye—unceasing in its pouring!

And by God, what a state, bearing witness to wasting grief,

in which speech itself is powerless to offer an explanation.

    Enough of my long absence—it has healed my envier’s heart;

let the sorrow and anguish I endure suffice you.

Ah, welcome, breeze of the morning zephyr,

traveling with the fragrance of morning’s fresh breaths.

Do you think you awakened eyelids drunk with sleep?

They woke—but this heart of mine has not grown sober.

And did you kiss there a mouth and a cheek,

then come bearing the perfume of rose or daisy?

Or else you passed by the quarters of a tribe,

and this fragrant breath comes from those parts.
