Does the free man owe the days a debt of vengeance
The free have vengeance for the days,
that the revolving firmament demands of him?
It is demanded by the orbiting sky.

أماis there no للسُكرfor drunkenness صحوٌsobriety أوor خمارُa hangover
Gently, O Time, be a little kinder.
Slow down, O time, be gentle a little.
Is there no sobriety or hangover after drunkenness?
Is there no sobriety for intoxication, and no veil for wine?
أماis there no فيin ذلةhumiliation الأمجادthe noble عيبٌshame

Is there no shame in the humiliation of the noble
It is a disgrace that glory has been humbled,
upon you, while no disgrace is easy for the free man to bear?
Dishonor is not easy for the free man to bear.
بنفسيmy life as ransom منthe one whom نأيتُI went far away بهwith him وصبريand my patience
يصاحبهit accompanies him وقلبيand my heart مستطارdistraught
My life would ransom the one I have taken far away; my patience
With myself whom I have brought, and my patience,
accompanies him, while my heart is distraught.
Accompanying me, while my heart rages.
واذكرهand I remember him بأنفاسwith breaths حرارburning

And I remember him with burning breaths,
And I remember him with burning breaths
echoed by burning entrails.
Repeated by fiery entrails.

My remaining after your departure—rather, my life—
My staying after your departure, indeed my life,
I see disgrace in it, and disgrace is fire.
I see shame in it, and shame is fire.
