جَلَبناwe brought الخَيلَthe horses مِنfrom أَجَأAja وَسَلمىand Salma
تَخُبُّthey trot عَوابِساًgrim-faced خَبَبَthe trot الذِئابِof wolves
We brought the horses from Aja and Salma,
We brought the horses from Ajaa and Salma
Trotting grim-faced with the trot of wolves.
Panting heavily, while the wolves howled
جَلَبناwe brought كُلَّevery طرفٍnoble steed أَعوَجِيِّof A'waj's stock
وَسَلهَبَةٍand a long-bodied mare كَخافِيَّةِlike a secondary wing feather العُقابِof an eagle
We brought every noble steed of A'waj's stock,
We brought every cross-eyed one
And every long-bodied mare, like an eagle's secondary wing feather,
And every unruly like the swooping eagle
نَسوفwearing away لِلحِزامِat the girth بِمِرفَقَيهاwith her two elbows
شَنونَlean الصُلبof back صَمّاءَsolid الكِعابِof hocks
Wearing through the girth with her two elbows,
We tied them to the girth with their forelegs
Lean-backed, with solid hocks.
Deaf, hard-hoofed, bleary-eyed
ضُرِبنَthey were urged on بِعَمرَةٍat 'Amra فَخَرَجنَso they emerged مِنهاfrom it
خُروجَlike the outpouring الوَدقِof rain مِنfrom خَلَلِgaps in السَحابِthe clouds
Urged on at 'Amra, they came streaming out of it,
They were hit at Amrah and came out
As rain pours through gaps in the clouds.
Like rain dripping through the clouds
فَكانواso they were بَينَeither among مَكبولٍfettered أَسيرٍcaptives
وَمُنعفِرِand one dust-smeared المَضاحِكِin the smiling teeth فيin التُرابِthe dust
So they were either fettered captives,
They were between a fettered captive
Or men with their smiling teeth dust-smeared on the ground.
And one rubbing his smile in the dust
وَلَوand if كانَتwere تُكَلِّمُto speak أَرضَthe land of قَيسٍQays
لَأَضحَتit would surely be تَشتَكيcomplaining لِبَنيto the sons of كلابِKilab
And if the land of Qays could speak,
If the land of Qais could speak
It would complain to the sons of Kilab.
It would complain about the sons of Kalb
وَقَدand indeed عَلَمتhave learned بَنوthe sons of عَبسٍ'Abs وَبَدرٍand Badr
وَمُرَّةًand Murra أَنَّنيthat I مُرٌbitter عِقابيmy punishment
The sons of 'Abs and Badr have learned,
The clans of Abs and Badr and Murrah know
And Murra, that my punishment is bitter.
That I am a bitter punishment
كَأَنَّas though مَحالَهاits grounds بِالنيرِat al-Nir حَرثٌa ploughed field
أَثارَتهُthey churned it up بِمَجمَرَةٍwith a compact hoof صَلابِstout steeds
As though its grounds at al-Nir were a ploughed field,
As if its dwellings were a plowed field
Churned up by stout steeds with compact hooves.
Stirred up by a flaming brand
فَلَمّاso when أَنthat (linking particle) بَدَتcame into view أَعلامُthe landmarks of لُبنىLubna
وَكُنَّand they were لَناto us كَمُستَتِرِlike something concealed الحِجابِby a veil
So when the landmarks of Lubna came into view,
When the flags of Luby appeared
And were to us like something hidden behind a veil,
And were veiled from us
صَبَحناهُنَّwe gave them a morning drink مِنfrom سَمَلِthe remaining dregs of الأَداويthe waterskins
فَمُصطَبِحٌso one drinking in the morning عَلىin عَجَلٍhaste وَآبِand one refusing
We gave them their morning drink from the waterskins' dregs,
We greeted them at dawn with spear points
Some drinking in haste, others refusing.
Galloping hastily on mares
وَيَومَand on the day of المَلحِal-Malh يَومَthe day of بَنيthe sons of نُمَيرٍNumayr
أَصابَتكُمit struck you all بِأَظفارٍwith claws وَنابِand a fang
And on the day of al-Malh, the day of Banu Numayr,
On the day of Malh, the day of Bani Numayr
You were struck with claws and a fang.
You were struck by claws and fangs
وَآنفand I disdain أَنto أَعُدَّrecount عَلىagainst نُمَيرٍNumayr
وَقائِعَناour battles بِرَوضاتِin the meadows of الرَبابِal-Rabab
And I disdain to recount against Numayr
Just now, I intend to count up against Numayr
Our battles in the meadows of al-Rabab.
Our exploits in the gardens of Rabab
وَبَينَand among يَعفُهُنَّYa'fuhunna (uncertain place-name) لَهُمof theirs رَقيبٌa lookout
أَضاعَhe neglected his duty وَلَمand did not يَخَفfear نَعبَthe croak of الغُرابِthe raven
And among Ya'fuhunna, a lookout of theirs
While a guardian failed to watch over them
Neglected his watch and did not fear the raven's croak,
And did not fear the croaking of the raven
وَأَلقىand he cast down نَفسَهُhimself وَهَوَينَand they swept down رَهواًat an easy pace
يُنازِعنَthey strain against الأَعِنَّةِthe reins كَالكِعابِlike young, full-breasted maidens
And cast himself down, while they swept down gently,
He threw himself headlong in the dust
Straining against the reins like young maidens.
Vying with the ostriches in running
