ياO بَنيsons of الصَيداءِal-Sayda رُدّواgive back فَرَسيmy horse
إِنَّماonly يُفعَلُis done هَذاthis بِالذَليلto the lowly
O sons of al-Sayda, give back my horse.
O people of Syda, return my horse to me
This is done only to the lowly.
This is only done to the disgraced one
لاdo not تَذيلوهُdebase him فَإِنّيfor I لَمnot (past negation) أَكُنI was
ياO بَنيsons of الصَيداal-Sayda لِمُهريtoward my colt بِالمُذيلone who debases (emphatic)
Do not debase him, for I have never been
Do not disgrace him, for I have never been
O sons of al-Sayda, one to debase my colt.
O people of Syda, one who accepts the dower from the disgraced one
عَوِّدوهُaccustom him كَالَّذيlike what عَوَّدتُهُI accustomed him to
دَلَجَnight travel اللَيلِthe night وَإيطاءَand trampling القَتيلthe slain
Accustom him as I accustomed him:
Accustom him as I had accustomed him
To night travel and trampling the slain.
To trotting through the night and trampling over the slain
أَحمِلُI carry الزِقَّthe wineskin عَلىupon مَنسِجِهِhis withers
فَيَظَلُّand he remains نَشواناًtipsy يَميلhe sways
I carry the wineskin upon his withers,
I carry the saddle on its blanket
And he remains tipsy, swaying.
So it remains restless, swaying
