صَبَحتُI attacked at dawn حَيَّthe clan بَنيthe sons of الجَرّارِal-Jarrar داهِيَةًa calamity
صَبَحتُ حَيَّ بَني الجَرّارِ داهِيَةً
ماnot أَنan emphatic particle لِتَغلِبَfor Taghlib بَعدَafter اليَومَtoday جَرّارُJarrar
ما أَن لِتَغلِبَ بَعدَ اليَومَ جَرّارُ
I brought calamity at dawn upon the clan of Banu al-Jarrar.
I woke up alive, O Jarir, with a piercing wit,
After today, Taghlib has no Jarrar.
No jarir can overcome me anymore,
نَحويtoward me النِهابُthe spoils وَنَحويand toward me كُلَّevery جارِيَةٍmaiden
نَحوي النِهابُ وَنَحوي كُلَّ جارِيَةٍ
كَأَنَّas though نِقبَتَهاher cheek-mark فيon الخَدِّthe cheek دينارُa dinar
كَأَنَّ نِقبَتَها في الخَدِّ دينارُ
Toward me come the spoils, and toward me every maiden,
My eloquence rushes toward me, as does every maiden,
As though the mark upon her cheek were a dinar.
As if her dimple were a golden dinar.
