أَخاa brother of الحَربِwar إِلّاexcept ساهِمُgaunt الوَجهِthe face أَغبَراdust-covered
She saw me like the scraps of a bridle, and never will she see
a brother of war but gaunt-faced and dust-covered.
أَخاa brother of الحَربِwar أَنif عَضَّتbit بِهِinto him الحَربُwar عضَّهاhe bit her
وَإِنand if شَمَّرَتdrew up her garments عَنfrom ساقِهاher shin الحَربُwar شَمراhe girded himself
A brother of war—if war bites him, he bites her;
and if war bares her shin, he girds himself.
وَيَحميand he defends إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle المَوتُdeath كانَwas لِقاؤُهُmeeting it

And he defends when his encounter with death is
a handspan away; he guards his honor against retreat.
كَلَيثٍlike a lion هِزَبرٍmighty كانَwas يَحميdefending ذِمارَهُall under his protection

Like a mighty lion that was defending his own,
the fates of death struck him squarely, and he fell headlong.
وَكُلَّand every كُمَيتٍdark-bay mare كَالقَناةِlike a spear-shaft طِمَرَّةٍlong-legged and fleet
وَكُلَّand every طِمرfleet steed يَحسَبُreckons الغوطَthe hollows حاجِراhigh ground
And every dark-bay mare, spear-slender and long-legged,
and every fleet steed that takes hollows for high ground.
وَنُبِئتُand I was told أَنَّthat اِبناًa son لِشَيماءَof Shayma هاbehold هُناhere

And I was told that a son of Shayma, right here,
sang about us, drunk or feigning drunkenness.
إِذاwhen المَرءُa man صَرَّتshrieked أُمُّهُhis mother وَتَعَيَّلَتand strutted
فَلَيسَthen he is not حَقيقاًentitled أَنto يَقولَutter الهَواجِرَfoul insults
When a man's mother shrieks and struts,
then he has no right to utter foul abuse.
يَحُضُّhe incites عَلَيناagainst us عامِراًAmir وَأَخالُناand I think we
سَنُصبِحُwe shall raid at dawn أَلفاًa thousand strong ذاwith زَائِدَmore عامِراAmir
He incites Amir against us, and I think we
will raid Amir at dawn, a thousand strong and more.

By your life, I fear no destitution while there remains
on earth a man of Qays driving camels,

and while around Farda and then Unasir,
and Kuthla stands a tribe in mighty throngs, O son of Shayma.
