وَنَجّاكَand saved you ياِبنَO son of العامِرِيَّةِal-ʿĀmiriyya سابِحٌa swimming-striding steed
شَديدُstrong in النَساthe thigh-sinew وَالقُصرَتَينِand both sides of the neck نُجيبُnobly bred
And a steed with swimming strides saved you, O son of al-ʿĀmiriyya,
Strong in thigh-sinew and both sides of the neck, nobly bred.
إِذاwhen قُلتI say قَدalready أَدرَكتُI have caught up فَاِبسُطthen loosen عَنانَهُhis reins
تَجَرَّدَhe streaks away سَيِّدٌa wolf أَسلَمتهُhave forsaken him غُيوبُhiding places
When I say, 'I have caught up,' loosen his reins:
He streaks away—a wolf whose hiding places have forsaken him.
فَلِلسَوطِso, for the whip أُلهوبٌa fiery gallop وَلِساقِand for the leg دِرَّةٌa surge of speed
وَبِالكَفِّand under the hand مِرّيخُlight on العِنانِthe reins نَعوبُswift-running
For the whip he has a fiery gallop, and for the leg a surge of speed;
And under the hand, light on the reins, he speeds along.
يَجُمُّhe recovers his strength عَلىunder الساقَينِthe two legs بَعدَafter كَلالِهِhis weariness
كَماjust as جَمَّrecovered its strength جَفرٌa young goat بِالكِلابِby the hounds نَقيبُmauled
He rallies under the rider’s legs after his weariness,
As a young goat mauled by hounds rallies.
