Ubḍah lies deserted by its people, and al-Ajāwil too,
and the valley of Nuḍayḍ, and the facing upland.
فَبُرقَةُand the stony tract of أَفعىAfʿā قَدalready تَقادَمَhas grown distant عَهدُهاits familiar days

فَماand not أَنat all بِهاin it إِلّاexcept النِعاجُthe wild cows المَطافِلُwith young
And Afʿā's stony tract—its familiar days are long past;
nothing is there but wild cows with their young.
وَذَكَّرنيهاand reminded me of it بَعدَafter ماthat قَدalready نَسيتُهاI had forgotten it

And I was reminded of it, after I had forgotten it,
by ashes and a trace still standing at al-Shabābah.

Gazelles wander around it, as though they were
pregnant slave women emerging from concealment.

A report reached me whose mention gives me no joy,
at which Yadhbul and Muwāsil are shattered.
أَفيis it in كُلِّevery عامٍyear سَيِّدa chief يَفقِدونَهُthey lose him
تَحَكَّكُchafe مِنfrom وَجدٍanguish عَلَيهِfor him الكَلاكِلُthe breasts
Must they lose a chief each year,
for whom breasts chafe in anguish?
وَأَيمand a widow يَكونis النَعلُthe sandal مِنهاfor her ضَجيعَةًa bedfellow
كَماjust as عُلِّقَتwere hung فَوقَabove السَليمِthe snake-bitten الجَلاجِلُthe bells
And a widow has a sandal for her bedfellow,
as bells are hung above the snake-bitten.
فَإِنso if يَكُbe رَبُّthe lord of العَينِal-ʿAyn خَلّىhas left مَكانَهُhis place
فَكُلُّthen every نَعيمٍdelight لاno مَحالَةَescape زائِلُpassing away
So if the lord of al-ʿAyn has left his place,
then every delight inevitably passes away.

And al-Rayyān had already been humbled on his account;
now even its highest peak stands diminished.

For I am one of you, clans of Ṭayyiʾ,
a fool who hoped for victory after Ibn Ḥayyah.

May you both be disgraced as the two chosen envoys,
and as two champions of war, in which the barren conceive.
