I say to my slave Jarwal, when I took him captive:

Tell me, and let not your being a poet deceive you.

I am the horseman who defends honor, and the one

Whose are noble deeds, lavish gifts, and glorious exploits.

And my people are the heads of men, and the head is the leader,

When war is set ablaze by flame-kindling hands.

For I am not, when men fear approaching death’s waters,

And its two basins brim and an eye stares fixedly,

A laggard who fears death in terror,

With a lean, hollow-flanked steed keeping me far from it.

But I face deadly perils with my straight spear,

In open combat, for the noble man fights openly.

And I quench my spearpoint’s thirst with blood held dear

To its people, when bonds of kinship offer no hope.
