نَجاescaped سَلامَةُSalamah وَالرِماحُwhile the spears شَواجِرٌinterlaced
نَجا سَلامَةُ وَالرِماحُ شَواجِرٌ
دَعواهُمُtheir battle cry بَنيsons of الصِيداءِal-Ṣīdāʾ
دَعواهُمُ بَني الصِيداءِ
Salamah escaped while the spears were interlaced;
They escaped unharmed, though speared by many a lance -
their battle cry was “Sons of al-Ṣīdāʾ!”
The sons of El Sayda claimed them for their own!
لَولاhad it not been for اِدِّعاؤُهُمtheir invoking بِدعوىwith the battle cry of غَيرِهِمpeople other than themselves
لَولا اِدِّعاؤُهُم بِدعوى غَيرِهِم
وَرَدتcame to water نِساؤُهُمtheir women عَلىto الأَطواءِthe wells
وَرَدت نِساؤُهُم عَلى الأَطواءِ
Had they not invoked another people's battle cry,
Had they not laid false claim to others' fame,
their women would have come to the wells.
Their women would have stayed in widow's gowns.
