هَيهاتَ هَيهاتَ بِرَيّاتِ الكَلَل
قَدindeed كانَwas أَدنىnearer موعِدa tryst مِنكَthan you وَعِلan ibex
قَد كانَ أَدنى موعِد مِنكَ وَعِل
Far, far away is Birayyat al-Kalal.
Alas, alas for the promises of meeting!
An ibex's tryst was nearer than yours.
The appointed time was nearer than you knew.
قَدalready مَرَّpassed شَهرانِtwo months وَلَمand have not يَأتِcome الرُسُلthe messengers
قَد مَرَّ شَهرانِ وَلَم يَأتِ الرُسُل
Two months have passed, and the messengers have not come.
Two months have passed while no messenger came;
