You live without a heart—are you alive without a heart?

And in Egypt are things that beguile hearts and take them captive.

O father of reason, you live—do not say, 'That is heedlessness.'

For a person's life lies in the mind's youthful passion.

Do you desire a simple life, free

From sin, in the abode of passionate longing and wrongdoing?

Would it please you to find the herald saying:

'A youth, dead to feeling, lived without sin'?

And how, when within your two cloaks is a youthful spirit,

With longings dwelling alongside it, side by side?
