If only what soothed you into sleep

I wish you hadn’t been satisfied and slept

had brought my eyelids rest after parting.

To give respite after intention to my eyelids

وليتني إذ يئستُ منكم

كبحتُ في غربتي شجوني

And if only, when I despaired of you,

And I wish when I despaired of you

I had reined in my sorrows in my exile.

I had restrained my laments in my exile

The deceit of hopes has passed, and at rest are

The deception of wishes passed

the aspirations of the sorrowful lover.

And the aspirations of the sad longing one

فما بكائي على حبيبٍ

فما بكائي على حبيبٍ

لم تقضَ في حبه ديوني

لم تقضَ في حبه ديوني

Why, then, do I weep for a beloved

So my crying is not over a loved one

in whose love my debts remain unpaid?

Whose love did not fulfill my debts

ألقيتُ بالنفس من هواهُ

ألقيتُ بالنفس من هواهُ

في لجةِ السحر والفتون

في لجةِ السحر والفتون

Out of love for him, I cast myself

I flung myself from his love

into the deep waters of magic and allure.

In the abyss of sorcery and temptations

وقلت أرتادُ من صباه

وقلت أرتادُ من صباه

ملاعب الطيش والجنونِ

ملاعب الطيش والجنونِ

And I said I would seek within his youth

And said I will revisit from his youth

the playgrounds of recklessness and madness.

The playgrounds of frivolity and madness

فما تذوقتُ من جناهُ

إلا صدى النوح والأنينِ

Yet of his fruit I tasted nothing

But I never tasted of his paradise

but the echo of wailing and moaning.

O splendor of the full moon in its sky,

and allure of blossoms on the boughs,

And temptation of flowers on the branches

تناس ما شئت تخبو

حرارةُ الدمع في الشئون

Feign forgetfulness as you wish; it will fade—

Forget what you wish, you hide

the heat of tears in the tear ducts.

وسوف تبلى على الليالي

غرائبُ السحر في العيون

And with the passing nights will wear away

And the wonders of magic in the eyes

the marvels of magic in the eyes.

Will wear out over the nights

أستغفر الحب سوف يبقى

على صروف الأسى حنيني

I ask love's forgiveness; there will remain,

despite sorrow's vicissitudes, my yearning.
