Yesterday has passed, and the world will pass swiftly.

For the days of life do not endure.

Yesterday has passed; I knew you only as a tale

    coated in pretense’s gaudy embellishments.

Are you my beloved—you? Long has my lament lasted,

and long have hopeless love and suffering endured.

You travel from Helwan at noon to see

a companion whose dwelling is Heliopolis.

And you stay with me two moments, eagerly,

and depart as though union with you were air.

Indeed, lost from my lot is a hope I had pinned

on you; there is no hope in oath-breakers.

If the truthful soul believes their words,

they reply with a false promise and do wrong.

    به من هواكم شقوةٌ وعناء

    A tormented heart battles me over you;

within it are misery and suffering from love of you.

If I tame it with patience in your absence, there appear

before it interceding stars from your radiance.

In every glimpse of your youthful charm are flashes,

eloquent, radiant as flames of morning.

If I say, “An eye like other eyes,” there rebel

enchantresses from it whose command is fate.

And if I say, “A cheek like other cheeks,” there blazes

in your cheeks, in the night of union, the sun.

And if my gaze wanders over your front teeth, there shine

gleaming lights crowned with radiance and splendor.

Do you smile for me alone? You speak truly; then what

troubles a soul in which you are serenity?

I am jealous, for my heart will never betray; indeed, it

surely bears witness that people are my rivals.

Your beauty has turned the conquerors into a band

of evil; they returned with loss—returned with loss.

When you come from Helwan seeking to see me,

hearts collapse and calamity runs rampant.

Your beauty is mine alone, and I am indeed a poet

at whose utterance of a letter the poets prostrate themselves.

You deliberately vex me by turning away; love has forgiven—

forgiven you; my soul is a sacrifice for the beloved.

You fled like a gazelle that had lost its bearings,

when a hunter came into view and escape grew dim.
