We return to our sins, we return.
We return to our sins, we return
For from these sins we benefit.
For from these sins we benefit

And we gulp down sins at every moment,
And we drink down our misdeeds every time
In a land where no sound judgment exists.
In a land where no wise opinion is seen

We were rational for a while, but it brought us harm—
Our mind has failed us
Sound judgment, through the strength of its reason.
With its strength of mind and right judgement

We thirsted, though the gardens held pools,
We thirst while the meadows have ponds
In them, water overflows yet gives nothing.
With overflowing water that is not generous

Can a young man of letters go to waste in Egypt,
Can an educated boy get lost in Egypt
When the magic of his eloquence calls for prostration?
For the magic of his eloquence that deserves prostration
