As a spirit of the jinn, alluring and beguiling.

تصد حيناً فيشقيني تمنّعها

وللجمال بأحلام الهوى بدع

وللجمال بأحلام الهوى بدع

At times she turns away, and her aloofness torments me.

At times aloof, causing me misery in her denial

And beauty has its marvels in the dreams of love.

For beauty has in the dreams of love, innovation

لو كان في كل يوم عندنا خبرٌ

لو كان في كل يوم عندنا خبرٌ

من دارها لقضينا العمر نستمع

من دارها لقضينا العمر نستمع

If every day we had some news

If we had news from her home every day

From her home, we would spend a lifetime listening.

We would spend our life listening

وكيف تكتب والهتّاف يسمعني

وكيف تكتب والهتّاف يسمعني

غريدها وحجاب الليل منصدع

غريدها وحجاب الليل منصدع

And how can she write when the telephone lets me hear

And how can I write while her chanting fills me

Her melodious song, while the veil of night is rent?

Her singing as the veil of night lifts

إذن فقد رحلت والثغر هام بها

إذن فقد رحلت والثغر هام بها

إن الثغور لأهل الحسن مرتبع

إن الثغور لأهل الحسن مرتبع

Then she has departed, and the port is enamored of her.

So she traveled while my mouth longed for her

Indeed, seaports are springtime retreats for the beautiful.

For mouths long for people of beauty

في عين شمس بها تأوى فتمتنع

في عين شمس بها تأوى فتمتنع

Alexandria is a home for her, after her dwelling

She left Alexandria for another house

In Ain Shams, where she takes refuge and stays beyond reach.

In Ain Shams she resides but denies

غداً أسافر ويح القلب من غده

غداً أسافر ويح القلب من غده

إني ليرهبني في القرب ما يقع

إني ليرهبني في القرب ما يقع

Tomorrow I travel—alas for the heart at what its tomorrow brings!

Tomorrow I travel though my heart grieves

Indeed, what happens in closeness frightens me.

For what may happen when close terrifies me

للقرب كالبعد معنى في مخاطره

للقرب كالبعد معنى في مخاطره

والنار في القرب أقوى حين تندلع

والنار في القرب أقوى حين تندلع

Closeness, like distance, has meaning in its perils.

Nearness is like distance in its dangers

And fire is fiercer in closeness when it flares.

And fire burns stronger when brought near

يغولني بعدكم عني فأردعه

والبعد يردع أحياناً فيرتدع

والبعد يردع أحياناً فيرتدع

Your distance from me assails me, so I fend it off.

You distance me from myself so I resist

And distance is sometimes checked, and so it relents.

And distance can restrain and deter at times

القلب يؤمن إيماناً بأنكمو

منى قريبٌ وأن الشمل مجتمع

The heart firmly believes that you

Are close to me, and that we are reunited.
