بيوتاhomes لناfor us فيهاin them وإنand although بعدتlay far away أهلkin
The Tigris, I heard, raged beyond its bounds and drowned
The Tigris overflowed, so I heard, and submerged
homes of ours, where—though far away—our kin dwell.
homes that, though far away, house our kin.
تحدثتspoke الأهرامAl-Ahram عنهاabout her وأطنبتand spoke at length
فعانيتand so I suffered ثكلاbereavement لاnot يقاسcan be compared بهto it ثكلbereavement
The days told its story and spoke of it at length,
Al-Ahram spoke of her and dwelt at length,
and I suffered a bereavement no bereavement can match.
and so I suffered a bereavement no bereavement can match.

In Layla’s abode, Time plies its handiwork,
In Layla's home, Time does its work,
and thus commits its wrong, with neither judgment nor reason.
and so commits wrong, with neither judgment nor reason.
أدجلةthe Tigris? تطغىoverflows كيفhow إنيindeed I إخالهاimagine her
بدمعwith tears of عيونeyes العاشقthe lover الصبthe lovesick one تحتلis occupied
Does the Tigris rage? How can that be? Indeed, I fancy her
Does the Tigris overflow? How? I imagine her
overrun by tears from the eyes of a love-stricken lover.
filled with tears from the eyes of the lovesick lover.
جنيتI did harm عليهاto her ماwhat جنيتI did harm بأدمعيwith my tears
فأمستand so she became وفيand in الطغيانthe overflowing منfrom أدمعيmy tears هولterror
I wronged her with what I wrought through my tears,
Whatever harm I did her, I did with my tears,
and now she is, in a flood born of my tears, a thing of terror.
and so her flood came to hold a terror born of my tears.
دموعٌtears سكبناهاwe shed them وفاءin loyalty بعهدهاto her covenant
ولمand did not ندرwe know أنthat الدمعtears فيin روحهits soul غلmalice
My tears—we poured them out, faithful to her covenant,
Tears we shed to keep faith with her,
never knowing that tears harbor rancor in their soul.
and we did not know that tears harbor malice in their soul.

Peace be upon you, people of the Tigris; indeed, I
weeping and ailing at the horror you endure.
am weeping and ailing at the horror you face.

Is it in March—March itself a garden—
In the month of March—when March is a garden—
that this viper rages there in its aggression?
does that viper rage there in its tyranny?

Then what will April’s judgment be when its season comes,
What, then, will April decree when its season comes,
with a fire of longing pouring from its depths?
and in its depths a fire of longing pours forth?

O dwelling of my ailing Layla, indeed, I
ask after you of all who skim low and all who soar.
surely ask those who fly low and those who soar for news of you.

I speak with you in spirit—the spirit is a flash of lightning;
I converse with you through the soul—the soul is a telegraph;
when feelings spring from it, it does not overstate.
when feelings issue from it, it is never costly.

Peace upon you—a thousand thousand wishes for safety,
Peace be upon you—a thousand thousand wishes for well-being,
