لقد طالت الساعات إني أعدها — Zaki Mubarak

لقد طالت الساعاتُ إني أعُدّها

وفي القلب وسواسٌ من اليأس ثائرُ

The hours have grown long; I count them,

and in my heart a whisper of despair rises in revolt.

أُسائل نفسي هل أراك وهل تفى

كما قد وفت هذي الدموع المواطر

I ask myself: will I see you, and will you keep faith,

as these rain-pouring tears have kept faith?

بوجهك لا تخلف وإني لمقسِمٌ

بوجهك والمفتون بالحسن كافر

By your face, do not break your promise; I swear

by your face—and one bewitched by beauty is an unbeliever.

سألقاك هل ألقاك إني ليائس

يجاهد أهوال الجوى ويصابر

I shall meet you—shall I meet you? I am in despair,

battling the terrors of love's anguish and steadfastly enduring.

إذا برقت عيناك ثار متيمٌ

إذا ثار ثارت في القلوب أعاصر

When your eyes flash, a lovestruck man is roused;

when he is roused, whirlwinds rise in hearts.

عيون لآيات البيان خوالق

عيون على غزو القلوب قوادر

Eyes that create the marvels of eloquence,

eyes capable of conquering hearts.

وخدٌّ تقول الراح إن رحيقها

عصائر من خدّ له الروح عاصر

And a cheek—wine says that its nectar

is juice from a cheek, which the soul presses.

سألقاك في هذا المساء سنلتقى

فإن كنت مقهوراً فإني لقاهر

I shall meet you this evening; we shall meet.

If you are overpowered, I am surely the conqueror.

فراراك من بطشى إذا رمت ضلّةٌ

لها في تلافيف الضلال شواجر

Flee my violence if some folly takes aim,

with tangled branches in the folds of delusion.

سألقاك هذا اليوم والليل مقمرٌ

يصافح نيران الهوى ويسامر

I shall meet you today, while the moonlit night

shakes hands with passion's fires and keeps them company.

سأسمع صوتا آية السحر عنده

وإني لمسحورٌ وصوتك ساحر

I shall hear a voice in which lies the marvel of enchantment;

I am indeed bewitched, and your voice is a sorcerer.

تناجى إذا أقبلتَ روحي بنبرةٍ

تشقّقُ منها للمحب مرائر

When you approach, you whisper to my soul in a tone

that tears the lover's innards apart.

تحدثني الآمال أنك قادمٌ

وأنك لي في غفوة الليل زائر

My hopes tell me that you are coming,

and that you will visit me in the night's brief slumber.

أمانيّمن قلبي فصاحٌ نواطقٌ

بأنك للميعاد يا روح طائر

My heart's wishes speak with eloquence,

saying that you, O soul, are flying to the rendezvous.

لقد طال هذا الانتظار وشفني

لخلفك سيف حاسم الفصل باتر

This waiting has grown long and wasted me away;

your broken promise bears a sword that severs with finality.

ملكت فأسجع واترك الظلم طائعاً

فما الحب للحسن المدلّل غافر

You hold sway; sing, then, and willingly abandon cruelty,

for love does not forgive pampered beauty.

تعال فما حلوان منى بعيدةُ

ولا أنا مأسورٌ يناجيه آسر

Come; Helwan is not far from me,

nor am I a captive whose captor whispers to him.

محمدُ هذا الوجه وجهٌ عرفتهُ

له في شعاب القلب مني أواصر

Muhammad, this face is a face I have known;

it has bonds with me in the heart's ravines.

فيا ابن سليمان سلامٌ وفرحةٌ

يجود بها جدّ رحيمٌ مصابر

So, O son of Suleiman, peace and joy,

lavished by a compassionate, steadfast grandfather.

أبوك ابنمٌ أنكرتُ في العيش رأيه

وما كان خدّاعا ولا هو ماكر

Your father is a son whose outlook on life I rejected,

and he was no deceiver, nor is he cunning.

حياةٌ تريه ما يريه وإنني

على طبعه المزاج راضٍ وصابر

Life shows him what it shows him, and I

am content and patient with his nature and temperament.

محمد ما أمرى وأمرك إنني

لأجهل ما ترمى إليه المقادر

Muhammad, what is my lot and yours? I

truly do not know what the fates are aiming at.

نظرتك واستوحيت وجهك عن أب

هو اليوم في وادي الحياة مسافر

I gazed at you, and your face brought a father to mind,

who today is traveling in the valley of life.

محمد لا تجزع فجدّك حاضرٌ

محمد لا تجزع فجدك حاضر

Muhammad, do not fret, for your grandfather is here.

سأقتل روحي فديةً لشبابكم

ألا إنما المقمور في الصدق قامر

I shall kill my soul as a ransom for your youth.

Behold, the loser at gambling is, in truth, the winner.

إذا الأب لم يحضر ولادة طفله

فللجد قلبٌ بالأبوة عامر

If a father is not present at his child's birth,

the grandfather has a heart filled with fatherhood.

محمد يا وحي الحياة ويا فتىً

له في فؤادي مشجيات سواجر

Muhammad, O inspiration of life, O young lad,

for whom poignant feelings blaze within my heart.

تعال إلى قلبي تعال ولا تقل

بأني مجنون المحبة شاعر

Come to my heart, come, and do not say

that I am a poet maddened by love.

لقد جنّ قلبي جنّ جنّ جنونه

وثارت بقلبيه رماح شواجر

My heart has gone mad—gone mad; its madness has gone mad,

and crossed spears have surged within its two hearts.

أدر طرف لحظيك اللطيفين لحظةً

لتعرف أني حافظ العهد ساهر

Turn the gaze of your two gentle eyes for a moment,

so you may know I keep the pledge and remain awake.

أعادلُ هذا أنت إني لشعار

طروبٌ له أيامه البيض تبسم

O Adel, is this you? I am indeed a prolific poet,

rapturous, while his white days smile upon him.

وفدت على قلبي فزالت كروبه

وأصبحتُ ألهو بالحياة وأنعم

You came to my heart, and its sorrows vanished;

and I began to revel in life and live in bliss.

ستقرأ شعرى قد قرأت بأعين

إذا نظرت كادت لروحي تترجم

You will read my poetry; already you have read with eyes

that, when they gaze, almost give voice to my soul.

ستفهم شعرى قد فهمت بلمحةٍ

ومبدع هذا اللحن لو شاء يفهم

You will understand my poetry; already you have understood with a glance,

and the creator of this melody would understand, if he wished.

وفدت وروحي يعصر الوجد روحه

سأنجو إذا صافيت روحي وأسلم

You came while longing wrung the soul of my soul;

I shall survive and be safe if you are true to my soul.

أنا اليوم مشتاق أنا اليوم شائق

به غادة الأحلام في النوم تحلم

Today I yearn; today I am one who inspires yearning,

of whom the maiden of dreams dreams in her sleep.
