يا أمير الغناء يفديك روحي

من صروف الهوى وجور الغرام

أذبلت عودك الصبابة حتى

عدت مثل الخيال في الأحلام

Longing has withered your frame until

You became like a phantom in dreams.

وغدا صوتك القويّ أنيناً

باكى اللحن شاكي الأنغام

And your strong voice became a moan,

Weeping in melody, plaintive in its notes.

خد دموعي فنح بها يا هزاراً

ذاب من قسوة الجوى والهيام

Take my tears, then wail with them, O nightingale,

Melted by the cruelty of heartache and consuming love.

صدّني عن لقاك فيض حنيني

لبلاد النخيل والآطام

The flood of my longing kept me from meeting you,

For the land of palms and fortresses.

قد دعتني مصرٌ فطار صوابي

وتناسيت ملهمى وإمامي

Egypt had called me, so my reason took flight,

And I let myself forget my inspirer and my guide.

وتجاهلتُ واجبي يوم تكري

مكَ بين الأماثل الأعلام

And I disregarded my duty on the day you were

Honored among the illustrious notables.

أنا بالروح والفؤاد صفيٌّ

قتقبل تحيتي وسلامي

In soul and heart, I am a devoted friend;

So accept my greeting and my salutation.
