ربّاهُ صُغتَ فؤادي
منfrom الأسىsorrow والحنينand longing
من الأسى والحنين
O my Lord, You fashioned my heart
My Lord, you have made my heart
from sorrow and longing.
Weary with sorrow and yearning,
ولمand did not تشأYou wish لضلوعيfor my ribs
ولم تشأ لضلوعي
غيرanything but الشجىheartache والشجونand sorrows
غير الشجى والشجون
And You willed nothing for my ribs
And you wished for my ribs
but heartache and sorrows.
Only heartache and sorrows.
فكيفso how تصفوbecome clear حياتيmy life
فكيف تصفو حياتي
منfrom الهوىpassion والفتونand enchantment
من الهوى والفتون
So how can my life be free
So how can my life become pure
of passion and enchantment?
Of passion and temptation?
أمor كيفhow ترجىis hoped for نجاتيmy deliverance
أم كيف ترجى نجاتي
منfrom ساجياتlanguid ones الجفونthe eyelids
من ساجيات الجفون
Or how can my deliverance be hoped for
Or how can you expect my salvation
from those with languid eyelids?
From the wakefulness of eyelids?
