O my lord, once you were
My master, once before
A solace on this road.
I found pleasure in this path
ومذand since تغّيبتَyou went away أمسىit became
ومذ تغّيبتَ أمسى
قذىًa mote بعينin the eye of المشوقthe yearning one
قذىً بعين المشوق
And since you went away, it has become
But since you've been away
A mote in the yearning one's eye.
It's become a thorn in my eye
فماso never مررتُI passed by صباحاًin the morning
فما مررتُ صباحاً
غلاboiled (likely a typo for 'except') غصصتI choked بريقيon my saliva
غلا غصصت بريقي
So never did I pass by in the morning
Never again I passed morning
Without choking on my saliva.
Without shedding a tear
ولاand not رجعتI returned مساءin the evening
ولا رجعت مساء
إلّاexcept شكوتُI complained of خفوقيmy heart's throbbing
إلّا شكوتُ خفوقي
Nor did I return in the evening
Nor returned in the evening
Without lamenting my heart's throbbing.
