O Lord, You fashioned my heart
My heart was nurtured
From sorrow and longing.

ولمand did not تشأyou wish لضلوعيfor my ribs
ولم تشأ لضلوعي
غيرother than الجوىburning grief والشجونand sorrows
غير الجوى والشجون
And You willed nothing for my ribs
and you wished not for my ribs
But burning grief and sorrows.
other than burning and lamenting
فكيفso how تصفوbecome free حياتيmy life
فكيف تصفو حياتي
منfrom الهوىlove والفتونand enchantment
من الهوى والفتون
So how can my life be free
So how can my life be serene
From love and enchantment?
of passion and temptation
أمor كيفhow ترجىis hoped for نجاتيmy deliverance
أم كيف ترجى نجاتي
منfrom ساجياتwomen with languid الجفونeyelids
من ساجيات الجفون
Or how can I hope for deliverance
Or how can you wish for my salvation
From women with languid eyelids?
