O Abu Shadi, you are a rapturous youth,

A captive of the eye, with an unfettered heart.

You remind me—but was I ever made to forget

    Alexandria's beauty, my friend?

And how could I, when above her dewy shore

The heart hovers, its throbbing unbroken?

May love watch over it—what a lovely shore,

Light of spirit, polished and elegant,

Splendid in its sand, you take it for draperies

    Embroidered with beads of agate.

I circle it, and my reverence overwhelms me,

As though I had circled the Ancient House.

O sanctuary of gazelles, you have lit my soul

With a lamp-niche of gentle beauty.

Those born blind see you as a preserve open to all,

Reminding them of the slave markets.

And if their veil were lifted, they would say:

"The maidens of eternity swim in nectar."

I returned to the shores after a month,

    Making my way along them toward the beauties;

And I found that autumn had harmed them,

As it harms the leafy, spreading trees.

And I returned, my dreams terror-stricken, lamenting,

And have not yet recovered from awakening's convulsions.
