Lightning flashes and rain—oh, the horror of what I see!

This universe has indeed gone mad at the sight of me alone.

Do the fires of my heart turn the universe into a tear,

Through which my eyes turn to sleeplessness upon sleeplessness?

I see serpents—so what is it they want?

And lion cubs that have fled the cradle.

So, O Lord, You are God—exalted be His praise.

And You shelter the thorns from the breath of roses.

Shelter this world with Your gentleness, out of mercy

For people who will face hardships after me.

O Mecca, have I committed any sin against you

Except love from a heart that took form in my tears?

I wander with it, sorrowful, joyful, thirsty,

And water the dwellings of love, abode after abode.

When the tempestuous wind rages, I rebuke it,

For there is no sound in my hearing but your voice.

May love's peace be upon you, O finest abode.

And do not grieve: surely parting leads to return.

For if I do not return to you, then surely I

Shall meet you on the Day of Resurrection, in that gathering.
