I saw you in Helwan—and oh, my yearning
Indeed, I saw you in Helwan—oh, my longing
For the breezes in Helwan’s desert!
For the breezes in the desert of Helwan!
قدindeed كانwas ليfor me عندهاin its vicinity وجدardent love بغانيةfor a beautiful woman
كأنهاas though she were الزهرthe blossoms فيin أيامthe days of نيسانApril
There I once felt passion for a beautiful woman,
There I once felt ardent love for a beautiful woman,
As though she were the blossoms in the days of Nisan.
As though she were blossoms in the days of April.

فصرتso I became بالوهمthrough fancy نشواناintoxicated بنشوانby an intoxicated one
I kissed her, seeking honey from her lips,
I kissed her, drawing honey from her lips,
And through fancy grew drunk with one who was drunk.
So, through fancy, I grew drunk on one who was drunk.

Whether love holds waywardness or right guidance,
Whether there is error in love or right guidance in it,
May God guard the one whose beauty led me astray.
Then may God guard the one who led me astray with beauty.
