I returned to the cradle of yearning and passion,

questioning my heart about you in reproach's absence.

I returned and found the resting place as it had been,

with you beside me, O soul, side by side.

For thirty days we have not met; what is it

about me that frightens you into fleeing my nearness?

You say that poetry about you is a scandal,

and exposing hidden passion is among the ugliest sins.

I have exposed you—do not be alarmed; not every exposer's

exposure is a sin to be cleansed by repentance.

Ah, my poetry about you is a righteous act I seek,

so I may be honored before my Lord on the Day of Reckoning.

My heart's sorrows are watered from the grapes,

so it may give drink to a beloved who lives without a heart.

For thirty days we have not met; and should he recite—

my reproacher—my poems, he would become one of my companions.

    Thirty days, or thirty years?

Ah, a day of separation is an age of war.

Love's resting place remains; if you wish, return,

to learn the secrets of what is veiled in my hidden depths.

And if you wish to forget what was between us,

do not forget the anguish I endured in love.

Peace upon the days of passion, and a greeting

from the outspoken poet and the yearning lover.

I shall give my heart fire to drink after your rejection,

so it may forget what once was in the time of closeness.

My head has turned gray—gray from the terror of your injustice,

and the fire of concealed heartache exhales grayness.

I confront my hair in the mirror, then turn away,

proud that I have grown gray through glory and love.

Even if my head has grayed in love, my youth

has the finest strength of flame you could hope for.

And what can fifty years, their calamities darkening, do

to a virile man of fierce valor, who slays calamity?

I revisit the days, counting their sins,

and every being in existence tends toward sin.

They recoil from me, loathing my rising

against them with the heavy weight of thrusts and blows.

Ah, my days are an existence I have created,

as one creates a fertile garden out of barrenness.

I truly fashioned you, O days; so be gentle,

for even a skittish maiden may grow calm at reproach.

Come, for this cradle is your cradle, and love

is, as you wish, flames of safety and terror.

Come, for this is Alexandria; its affairs

are yours to command, and your cherished refuge is in my heart.

When the sea's waves roar, I suffer a burning anguish,

with resounding fires and a dreaded aftermath.

Ah, everything here seeks refuge in you,

as anguished soil seeks refuge from the ordeals of thirst.

Come, for separation troubles this shore,

where you once were the Pole Star throughout its reaches.

The sea's waves strained upward, sniffing a blossom:

it is the fragrance sought from love's vine.

Come, let us rescue it from its heartache with a night

in which passions charge, leap upon leap.

For the waves do not settle, if their restraint is lost,

without charging passion roaring close at hand.

My fate fights me for you; do not aid

a tyrant, rebellious in spirit, who takes by force.

And do not make the world, by forsaking me, an eye

with ulcerated lids and ruined lashes.

For the world—you are its bliss—may become,

when you are absent, a fire of bewilderment and dread.

I fight my fate for you alone; whoever wins

your beauty spends his life on the field of war.

From what fire was your beauty forged? Indeed,

I see you peerless in beauty, like the longing in my heart.

I see myself seeing—what do I see? That is a burst of wrath

from bloodthirsty fate, like a keen, cleaving blade.

Frightening flashes of lightning and rumbling thunder

remind these people of the consequence of sin.

Ah, if only, while the universe breathes out its soul,

I could share the burning pains with you, draught upon draught,

to recall what once passed between us in love,

with you beside me, O soul, side by side.

The fates grew angry, and their face darkened

with the visage of a sky proclaiming wrath through clouds.

Fates like tempestuous love; their burning thirst

is the thirst of demons taking wing with shooting stars.

This universe has gone mad—its madness has gone mad—

and become like a starved lion in the steppe.

Is this the universe's roar, or is that a cry,

its breaths bloodied, hurled out by my heart?

Come, behold the lightning that warns of a rainfall

whose blessings are condemned, whose bounty is hated.

Come, shelter your lovesick one from the terror of a night

in which horrors charge, one on the heels of another.

Ah, my heart will not hunger, even if they grow dark—

the tempers of an age that threaten the heart with hunger.

And how could the heart hunger, when the whole universe

is brides, captured by passion and themselves captivating?

I sinned in this view; polytheism is unjust,

violating oneness, the law of love.

I sinned by saying it; you have no equal

to share with you the blaze of longing from my heart.

Has the giver of treasures ever bestowed, in kindness,

your like anywhere in the East or West?

The soul hovers over you at every moment,

as a thirsty man gazes at the sweet watering place.

And I glimpse my dreams as birds flying toward you,

and lay bare what is concealed behind the veils of the unseen.
