وفي صوته الحنان كالنحل في الوردِ
I remembered Rushdi in the beauty of his face,
I remembered Rashdi in the morning, his face
and in the tenderness of his voice, like bees among roses.
And in his voice the tenderness like bees in roses

وأنضر من طفل يدثّر في المهد
Lovely, gentle of spirit, delicate as wine,
Handsome, gentle spirited like the softness of wine
and more radiant than a child swaddled in the cradle.
And fresher than a babe wrapped in the cradle

أرقّ من النجوى وأحلى من الشهد
Features of translucent light, and a countenance
Eyelids of light, lips of dew and dawn
more delicate than whispered confidences and sweeter than honey.
More subtle than whispers, sweeter than honey

فأضحيت مقهوراً وخلّفني وحدى
Indeed, I thought the world bereft of his love,
The world is empty, empty without his love
so I became crushed, and he left me alone.
So I became downcast, and he left me alone

With which sorrows are kindled, fire upon fire?

Perfumed with herbs, sweetened with roses

Indeed, all calamities had proved powerless against me,
All misfortunes were powerless against me
so they never cast me into the valleys of sleeplessness.
Never casting me into valleys of desolation

But they—and injustice is part of their doing—
But misfortune in some of its work
struck my heart at your death, O Rushdi.
Struck my heart at your death, O Rashdi
