I circle about you in my dreams, hoping

To clasp your hands in spirit in the darkness of night.

Eighty days—their bliss has been lost to me,

As though I were alone in existence, without kin.

I have become a stranger in the world because your home is far away,

And the heart's estrangement is a kind of killing.

Come, rescue me from longing for one night,

And do not be miserly with miserliness, O most generous of people.

The world rebelled against me and became desolate,

So nowhere but in your abode are roses left for me.

When my longing surges, I say: that is a remnant

Of life, through which that longing keeps me alive.

I ask those who envy you about you, as though I

Had gone away with no memory of your affection.

Is this your portrait, with you in a garden

Where apple trees, myrtle, and roses surge in waves?

I remembered your conversation on the festival day,

So I created what I created, and love creates.

I remembered that I was once your intimate friend,

And you came to my breast more swiftly than light.

I remembered how we were, and there rushed

To my eyes tears from sorrow's uprising.

If you will not return willingly, then I

Will return to your home against your will.

    Eighty days, and all existence

Is dense darkness in which no star gleams.

When you are absent from me, I have nothing of the hills,

When they blossom at morning—no share, no portion.

Haunts of play slipped from my grasp after your departure,

And nothing remains of them but what fancy creates.

Come, come; I am waiting for you,

And with me are sweet conversation, wine, and a brimming cup.

I remembered the day in Alexandria, when love

Shook my soul, raging with every tremor.

    I remembered—could I forget?—and that was a night

That will remain in my mind with its tinted past.

We stood, and the waves in the sea had a cry

That I imagined in the night as a lion's roar.

We stood and communed with existence in a raging surge

Of longing, ablaze with feeling, deadly.

You forgot, you forgot—how? I surely remember

Moments never forgotten, however long ago they were.

If ever lovers glory in their love one day,

For us, love has neither before nor after.

Our love is love itself, and all lovers,

However great, are soldiers beneath our banner's shade.

You deliberately abandoned my heart, though it

Is surely bitter sap, sweet to taste, before which honey bows.

You turned away—may you enjoy what you wished for your soul,

For I do not reproach you for that turning away.

I commune with your love at every moment, yearning,

And I am not absent from that presence.

A smiling bloom portrays you to the heart and soul,

From the garden, adorned by the hands of henna-dyed women.

If ever a soul meets a soul, then we,

Despite our distance, share the rapture of mutual response.

Helwan is my boon companion throughout my life,

And every lovely thing in the cities is Helwan.

    فثارت بقلبي حين أصحر نيران

    Toward it a light traveled by night, its beacon in my heart;

Then, as it came into the open, fires flared in my heart:

Wonders of longing and dreams of youthful passion,

Which a demon depicts in poetry and prose.

O inhabitants of Helwan, greetings and heartache,

For you dwell in the heart of the love-stricken.

I stood at Bab al-Luq ninety times,

Asking every passerby, coming or going, about you.

When the locomotive shrieks, I say: perhaps I

May win a radiant bird passing auspiciously.

Does Bab al-Luq know that I love it,

Though it lays me bare in my infatuation and longing?

I circle it each day and turn back

With a heart beating tempestuously between my ribs.

Peace upon the land of Maadi and its people,

The greeting of a lover whom longing overwhelms.

Green gardens—if I wished, I would press them

And turn them into poetry that wins and takes the lead.

Greetings to the bathing pool, while the air is summery,

And there it has neither west nor east.

Willowy beauties meet the waters, swimming,

And from every enchanting breast, beauty unfolds.

Maadi al-Khubayri—who is al-Khubayri, and what is his name,

And how does he fare as the wind lashes the ships?

He desired what we do not desire, and so

His Maadi became an arena for sins and slaughter.

My longing for it pulls at me, and indeed I

Harbor a longing for the wafting fragrance of musk.

When I inquire into the traces of its inspiration, I nearly

Assail my heart with reproach, or weep.

Gardens to which no poet has made pilgrimage

Except the full-voiced nightingale, whom blossoms enchant.

I went to them, and the late afternoon seemed,

With its tawny light, so delicate as to be wine.

At their gate, Ridwan awaits my return

And looks to see what I offer him: poetry.

You have soared, O my poetry; burning longings have soared,

When they sigh, magic itself is lovesick for them.

I revisit the days of Maadi, hoping I

May ease the weariness and anguish within me.

I suffer blazing fires from the painful summer heat,

They drew summer's hellfire and longing from my heart.
