كما يجرى الشقيق إلى الشقيق

Do you remember how the waves would run,

I recall how the waves used to flow,

As one brother runs to another?

Like chicory running to chicory.

وقفنا في جوار اليمّ سكرى

وقفنا في جوار اليمّ سكرى

كسكر الناظرين إلى الرحيق

كسكر الناظرين إلى الرحيق

We stood beside the sea, drunk,

We stood by the inebriated sea,

As drunk as those who gaze upon nectar.

Intoxicated as those who to wine now see.

نرى في البر ألوان التناجى

نرى في البر ألوان التناجى

وفي البحرِ المشارف والعميق

وفي البحرِ المشارف والعميق

We see on land the hues of whispered conversation,

On land we saw hues of parting,

And in the sea, the heights and the deep.

In the sea depths and shallows lying.

كأن الحسن ذاب بكل لونٍ

كأن الحسن ذاب بكل لونٍ

نراه وفي المياه وفي الطريق

نراه وفي المياه وفي الطريق

As though beauty had melted into every hue

As if all beauty in every hue,

We see, both in the waters and along the road.

We saw in the waves and along our way too.

سكرنا سكرة الحرمان حتى

سكرنا سكرة الحرمان حتى

كلانا كالأسير وكالطليق

كلانا كالأسير وكالطليق

We grew drunk with deprivation, until

We got drunk on the wine of longing, until

Each of us was like a captive and like one set free.

Each of us seemed a prisoner, and free.

وهذا الجوّ يملؤه حناهٌ

وهذا الجوّ يملؤه حناهٌ

ولو أن الغروب من الحريق

ولو أن الغروب من الحريق

And this air is filled with tenderness,

The air is filled with affection,

Even though the sunset is aflame.

Though the sunset seems an embered collection.

وأبنا أوبةَ المهزومِ لكن

وأبنا أوبةَ المهزومِ لكن

بنا طرقٌ من الأدب الحقيقي

بنا طرقٌ من الأدب الحقيقي

And we returned as the defeated return, yet

We built a refuge for the defeated,

We carry within us the ways of true literature.

With ways of true manners completed.

وحين مضى القطار يقل وجدى

وحين مضى القطار يقل وجدى

ووجدك كالرفيق من الرفيق

ووجدك كالرفيق من الرفيق

And when the train set off, bearing my longing

When the train went, taking Wajdi,

And yours, like one friend parting from another,

And you, my friend and fellow traveler.

رأينا الحسن وثّاباً جريئاً

رأينا الحسن وثّاباً جريئاً

يحاصرنا كأحلام العشيق

يحاصرنا كأحلام العشيق

We saw beauty bounding forth, bold,

We saw beauty attack bold and valiant,

Besieging us like a lover's dreams.

Besieging us like a lover's dreams patient.

فعوّضنا من التبريج صفواً

فعوّضنا من التبريج صفواً

ومن صور الخشونة بالرقيق

ومن صور الخشونة بالرقيق

So it gave us serenity instead of showy display,

We replaced separation with joy,

And delicacy instead of images of coarseness.

And rough images with the gentle and coy.

وأضحكنا من السفر المواتى

وأضحكنا من السفر المواتى

بألوان الأثاث وبالزعيق

بألوان الأثاث وبالزعيق

And made us laugh at the agreeable journey,

We laughed at the dreary journey,

With its varied furnishings and its clamour.

With furniture's colors and noisy flurry.

رموه خنادقاً وقلاع حربٍ

رموه خنادقاً وقلاع حربٍ

فصار مدى الطريق من المضيق

فصار مدى الطريق من المضيق

They piled it into trenches and battle-forts,

They threw trenches and forts of war,

So the whole length of the way became a narrow passage.

So the road seemed straitened and sore.

وذا طستُ الغسيل يداس حتى

وذا طستُ الغسيل يداس حتى

يزمجر بالرعود وبالبروق

يزمجر بالرعود وبالبروق

And this washbasin is trodden on until

When I did the laundry and wrung,

It roars with thunderclaps and flashes of lightning.

It roared with thunder and lighting sprung.

وتمضى الغانيات على تثنٍّ

وتمضى الغانيات على تثنٍّ

تثنّى النور في الجو الصفيق

تثنّى النور في الجو الصفيق

And the beauties pass by, swaying,

The songs went on in a double strain,

Like light swaying in the dense air.

Light's double in the clear terrain.

فسبحانَ المكافىء والمعزّى

فسبحانَ المكافىء والمعزّى

وما أدنى الرجاء بكلّ ضيق

وما أدنى الرجاء بكلّ ضيق

So glory to the one who recompenses and consoles!

Glory to the Rewarder and Solace-Grantor,

And how near hope is in every hardship!

How narrow is hope in every plight and corner!

لقد عدنا بقهقهةٍ وأنس

لقد عدنا بقهقهةٍ وأنس

وأحلام الرشاقةِ والرشيق

وأحلام الرشاقةِ والرشيق

Indeed, we returned with hearty laughter and companionship,

We returned with laughter and company pleasant,

And dreams of grace and the graceful one.

With dreams of gracefulness and the quiescent.
