You spoke truly—but how? That is a tale

that leaves its teller at a loss and its recorder helpless.

I saw you like rain pouring down in the morning,

bringing roses to life and making colocynth green.

Are you solace and comfort for all creation,

like the full moon's light freely bestowed at night?

Stay where you are; do not seek my affection, for I,

despite my passion for beauty and wine, retain my reason.

Your making yourself common has withered your beauty; and love

finds shelter and refuge in the precincts of chastity.

Forbidden to my heart is beauty preyed upon

by scattered snares, till it weakens and wilts.

For others are the great trees brought, their boughs humbled

by south and north winds playing among them.

For others is wine's roar, its fire extinguished

by a blend of cool water bestowed by a stream.

    When you mix wine with water, you extinguish it;

God curse whoever kills wine with water!

Your beauty was pure wine I passed round

for my soul, drinking deep of its sweet radiance.

So how can you think I would choose you, when there have surged

over the cup dregs heavier than debt?

Indeed, I live with a heart kept pure

from idolatry, with no fatal opening for an assailant.

If asked who among creatures is finest by nature,

then, thanks to God and love, I come first.

Noble men contest life's glory with me,

mighty men—but I am mightier and better.

    وإن سمعوا صوتي أفاقوا فولولوا

    Whenever they seek my share of glory, they fail;

and if they hear my voice, they awaken and wail.

I chose my enemies, and they were a band

with a stronghold amid glory's winding ways.

    وقتل الأسود الصيد بالسيف أجمل

    I chose them out of loyalty to my resolve and strength;

slaying proud lions with the sword is finer.

When I am told: This man is preparing a slander

against you, soaring and stooping in dispute,

    I feign ignorance with a knowing man's indifference;

I do not ask about the garden's flies within the garden.

    هنيئاً لهم هذا الثواب المعجل

    Some people have gained honor by having me as their adversary;

much joy to them in this swift reward!

When my soul turns away from war, they threaten

war, charge in safety, and bluster.

But if I feel inclined to kindle war, peace is made

by wolves restrained by their piety and devotion.

You belong to Adam—God pardon a father

content with your kinship, though no bond connects him.

You oppose me secretly so I remain ignorant of your aggression

and keep silent about you; a freeborn man bides his time.

What, then, have you gained from hypocrisy whose bliss

is hell? Concealing disease wounds more deeply and kills more surely.

Your aggressor grew insolent in secret, not knowing

that I am charged with exposing those who harbor malice.

Awaken from the aggression you harbor,

return to the abode of repentance, and be sensible.

I shall fell you openly, faithful to a cutting blade—

a keen sword like fate's reversals, indeed more dreadful.

When your bones are trifles to my pen,

you are its food upon the battlefield.

You claim credit for your suspicious silence, as though

you could ever speak and act.

You turned aside—but how? That is a tale

that leaves its teller at a loss and its recorder helpless.

is precious; in Asyut I alight in spirit.

If a phantom from Asyut passes by, it stirs me,

and in my anguish for it I nearly kill myself.

secret impulses from my soul, charging and running wild.

Why, charmer, do you inspire a temptation

that startles the yearning heart and leaves it dazed?

In Asyut you will witness what you do not wish,

when a reproacher is there and faultfinders spread rumors.

You say Wahiba is among the travelers,

and among them is her bright, beaming radiance.

If what you relate is true, she is a rival wife

to my heart's beloved, who has a home for all time.

And what can I hope for, when Wahiba's tenderness

is newborn, like a child's affection when pampered?

Am I to love little girls and abandon a graceful maiden

whom a burnisher polished, inspired by love and beauty?

    وقد ينفع الحسن الأصيل التنقل

    An Asyut woman, cradled in Santaris;

and travel may benefit true-born beauty.

May Love pardon her—how she departed and drew away,

leaving none of her kindness for us to hope for.

    وإني لمظلومٌ عن الظلم يسأل

    I am the wrongdoer, offending her through my coldness;

yet I am wronged, and held to account for wrongdoing.

    I travel on Tuesday—if only I

could know what Tuesday will do.

    Tuesday challenges me, and love—

the heart's love—is sent forth on Tuesday.

When the locomotive screams a departing traveler's scream,

at which Bab al-Hadid almost shudders,

my heart turns toward Shubra and its people,

for there I have a soul that gives and withholds.

    وإن ثار مقهوراً فرعد مجلجل

    When gentle, it is blossom in kindness and delicacy;

when roused under oppression, it is rolling thunder.

Sweetly nasal, mellow in voice, you would think its tune

a gazelle's cry, from which the ear drinks again and deeply.

    وإن لان كادت بالهوى تتوسل

    Its glances, when it clouds over, are thunderbolts;

when it softens, they almost plead through love.

in a beam that, inspired by gentleness, captivates and beguiles!

Shubra, do you show me delusion in love?

Some love is sinful, misleading waywardness.

Exalted are you, Shubra; exalted is the longing

    kindled by that kohl-eyed gazelle.

A beauty we sheltered from people for a time

turned away from us, a begging supplicant.

Who, then, will tell that beauty that I

have become ascetic, and my purified heart is widowed?

Your beauty—do not recall its time with praise,

for it has become history, retold until it wearies.

Your beauty was pure wine I passed round

for my soul, drinking deep of its sweet radiance.

So how can you think I would choose you, when there have surged

over the cup dregs heavier than debt?

Remnants of old yearning and anguish—

I shall embitter them with tears the hour you depart.

nor do I ask about its resting place on earth.

What kept me from the truth you fear

was a passion that, in love, turns from truth's path.

when such coyness in love delights a yearning soul?

Blessed are you, Tuesday; there have passed

ages, while you remain the gracious, generous giver.
