Eid has come, and the heart, with burning grief,
The day of Eid has come while my heart is filled with sorrow
And hidden anguish and longing, is riven.
And suppressed anguish and overwhelming passion

I return to dreams to breathe in their flowers,
I return to dreams to pick their flowers
And that appalling withering stuns me.
Only to be horrified by their dreadful withering

Varied forms of buried grief revisit me,
Waves of buried sadness wash over me
And a heart stung by agonies is terrified.
And pierce my heart with stabbing pain

I lunged at the days a million times,
A million times life has proven
And never knew that I would be humbled.
That I did not know I would one day bow in humility

He has died who, had he lived, would have been a leafy grove,
The one whose life, had it continued, would have been my solace
In whose shade I would slumber in the midday heat.
Comforting me when distant from home

A sincere brother, truthfulness but one of his virtues,
A true brother whose honesty had no blemish
And in him there was no place for blame.
And deserved no blame

His family cried for me when they realized
That no tears remained in my tear ducts.
I had no more tears left to shed

They called one another to the grave that embraced his body,
They called out to the grave that held his body
Then weeping hearts and ribs rose in tumult.
And their weeping hearts were torn asunder

And had any strength been left to me despite the distance,
Had I the power to reach him from afar
I would have hastened to the hallowed grave.
I would have rushed to his pure grave

Is that an Eid eve? Alas, and a sigh—
Oh the night of that Eid, alas and alas
If sighs can be of use in fear.
If sorrows in fear could be of benefit

A bereaved man wept, not knowing the taste of his bereavement.
A bereft mother cried, not knowing the taste of bereavement
Does a poisoned man sense the poison being steeped for him?
Can poisoned wine be fully sensed?

And if at the grave—your grave—there were an opening,
If only near his grave there was a window
Then I would come to it, asking and pleading.
Through which I could come imploring and pleading

Iron and stones have trapped his talents
Which, had they survived, would have gleamed with purity.
That would have shone like purity itself

Your spirit shines brighter than those stars

And some bitter reproach hurts and causes pain.
Some reproach is bitter and hurts

So will the fates hear my reproach and relent,
Can fate hear my rebuke and show mercy?
And restore that serenity—will they restore it?
To bring back that clarity, can it return?

I shall spend Eid day alone, in anguish,
I will spend the day of Eid in sorrowful solitude
Communing with you in my anguish—and communion brings delight.
Speaking to you, and in speech there is pleasure

If indeed that grave has embraced you, then it has enclosed
If that grave contains you, so it embraces
Blossoms for which all flowers would sacrifice themselves.
Flowers that all flowers together redeem

So let me add a cherished bloom you knew,
Then let me add one precious flower I knew
And my verse is more radiant and more fragrant than flowers.
My poetry is the most splendid and radiant of flowers

Indeed, you used to recite it and sing its melody,
You used to water it and recite its song
So I would hear the melodies of immortality and be sated.
So let me hear the melodies of eternity and be satisfied
