رأيتُ حياة المرء ما بين ساعةٍ

رأيتُ حياة المرء ما بين ساعةٍ

تطيبُ وأخرى لا تفيق من الهمّ

تطيبُ وأخرى لا تفيق من الهمّ

I have seen a mortal’s life, from one hour to the next:

I have found a man's life to lie between an hour

one hour grows sweet, another never wakes from sorrow.

That is sweet, and another that never recovers from sorrow.

فيا رب إما رمتَ لي العز منعماً

فيا رب إما رمتَ لي العز منعماً

ففي قرب من أهوى وبعد أخى اللوم

ففي قرب من أهوى وبعد أخى اللوم

O Lord, if You graciously intend glory for me,

So, Lord, if You graciously intend honor for me,

let it lie in nearness to the one I love, and distance from the brother of blame.

Then let it lie in nearness to the one I love and distance from the brother of reproach.

وإن كان لي فيما قضيتَ مساءةٌ

وإن كان لي فيما قضيتَ مساءةٌ

فحزنٌ على النائين جبرتي القدمِ

فحزنٌ على النائين جبرتي القدمِ

And if there is pain for me in what You have decreed,

And if there is distress for me in what You have decreed,

then grief for those far away has been my consolation from of old.

Then let it be grief for those far away—my neighbors of old [reading uncertain].

وإن شئت لي يوماً جوارك فلأكن

وإن شئت لي يوماً جوارك فلأكن

شهيد الهوى لا نضوهم ولا سقم

شهيد الهوى لا نضوهم ولا سقم

And if one day You will me the grace of dwelling near You,

And if one day You wish me beside You, let me be

then let me be a martyr to love—not wasted by care or sickness.

A martyr to love, not their wasted victim, nor a sickly man.

وطوّل حسابي في المعاد على الهوى

وطوّل حسابي في المعاد على الهوى

فطول أحاديث الصبابة من همي

فطول أحاديث الصبابة من همي

And prolong my reckoning at the Resurrection on account of love,

And prolong my reckoning for love in the hereafter,

for lingering over tales of yearning is among my deepest concerns.

For lingering over tales of longing is one of my desires.
