O Abu Shadi, while you are a joy-loving youth,
O Abu Shadi, you are a rapturous youth,
captive to the eye, yet free of heart,
A captive of the eye, with an unfettered heart.

You remind me—but was I ever made to forget
of Alexandria’s beauty, my friend.
The beauty of Alexandria, O my friend?

The heart hovers, its beating unbroken?

cleaving my way along them toward the fair,
Making my way there toward the beauties.

I returned, terror-stricken in my dreams, lamenting—
And I returned with terror-stricken dreams, lamenting—
