O night of Eid, what will you do?

I fear love's anguish, O night of Eid.

Will you come when I have no hope in you

Except refuge in the phantoms of promised meetings?

Years passed and ages went by, while I

Made merry with grape clusters on Eid night.

How, then, has life today grown desolate,

Cut from the hides of boulders?

Those who have ruled by love's command

Have shown no fear of love in capturing and chaining me.

Unbelief, in its overwhelming ignorance and darkness,

Is less grievous than their ignorance of my songs, even for a day.

I complain to love of what its tumult has made

Of our bright days, hostage to black eyes.

O sender of Eid whenever his affections choose—

Had he wished, I would have spent my life in celebration.

    مصر الجديدة مأوى الخرّد الغيد

    Leave Alexandria; leave your refuge there;

Heliopolis is the haven of bashful, graceful maidens.

O you untroubled by my yearning and my passion,

And sleeping, heedless of my torments and my sleeplessness,

Do not make Eid, in all its radiant freshness,

A day dismayed by sorrows and misery.

    العيد للروح مثل الماء للعود

    Do not wither a thirsty heart by turning away from it;

Eid is to the soul as water to the bough.

    O heedless ones—yet I have never ignored their kindnesses;

They have seen nothing from my heart but my praise.

Like the thirsty afflicted by a river they cannot reach.

You have slain love utterly; beware your morrow,

And combat the anguish of the forsaken at Eid.

That I shall remember you on Eid night.

O night of Eid, what will you do?

I fear love's anguish, O night of Eid.

Of my soul—come, for this is Eid night.

You are Eid; show me the way to my Eid.
