A beautiful face, devoid of inspiration, around which I circle,

As a captive of thorns circles an idol.

He persists in feeble argument after argument,

As though the worth of souls lay in eloquence.

He complained to me of my silence about his charms.

Beauty is in the soul; beauty is not in the body.

A beautiful face and a slender, graceful form,

And a heart that time has never visited with sorrow.

Joyful, he laughs while pains rage through me.

O Lord, never make him drink my sorrow’s burning anguish.

I gaze at him and seek in his countenance

A light to dispel what I endure from my days.

To him, the world is gardens, and in his joy he is

Like a bird frolicking from bough to bough.

You inspired, you inspired this verse—so rise with it.

In his soul, seriousness is a specter of affliction.

Do not inspire, do not inspire verse: I am enamored,

And poetry saddens me, and beauty holds me captive.
