I received a letter from the spirit of beauty

that led astray a heart beguiled by beauty.

I received it while night's darkness overwhelmed,

and with it radiant dawn came on.

I covered its two sides with fifty kisses,

and your handwriting, like a lovely beauty spot, is kissed.

Is this your handwriting, or images of paradise

that speak and act to guide the lost?

I gaze upon it, soul to soul, as though I

see you and drink deeply from your face's radiance.

Do you invite—do you invite—a lover to visit,

who goes mad and grows sane as passion wills?

I shall ride lightning's back at once; we shall meet.

Minutes spur me toward you and carry me along.

The sweet letter says, "Indeed, I love you."

If what you say is true, then be just.

The address is indeed clear—the address of your home.

Do you dwell on Corniche Street, O spirit?

Are you on Corniche Street? For passion

and enchantment, the Corniche is a haven and refuge.

For an age I lavished my longing upon the Corniche,

and Marseille's Corniche is more wayward and more reckless.

On Marseille's Corniche I began, and beside it

I left a love that endures and never changes.

O Corniche of Marseille, greetings, anguish,

and longing are sent to your bright days.

Have you, Marseille, enchantment I might serve

to my soul, if I return, growing nobler through folly?

The world has changed; its people have changed,

and life's clearest sign is change.

Where are my loved ones in Marseille—where are they?

And where is a time graced with serenity?

Is this your handwriting? If only I could doubt it!

For you never used to ask after me in despair's blaze.

Nor did I hope you would say that we

are two lovers whom passion overwhelms, so we act foolishly [reading uncertain].

Lines—the blackness of kohl on a maiden's eyelid

is less alluring than their darkness, and pales beside it.

Is this your handwriting? I have recognized it, and I

shall learn from it what I shall do.

Luminous letters—your face is their light,

and your gleaming hair shades them with enchantment.

Is this your handwriting? Ah, the tyranny of a charm

that shakes my heart in passion and unsettles it!

A letter came in August, while the summer heat was scorching,

and through it, love's intoxication nearly brought me to reason.

When the wine of passion runs riot in a heart,

good sense awakens there, an ascetic absorbed in worship.

And in August, my birth-month, a yearning rose high,

whose dwelling in the world of yearning is August.

I was born with the grapes, while the Nile was in revolt,

dealing injustice across the land, and thereby doing justice.

I was born amid fierce summer heat, and swiftly came

the first heralds of my gray hair, kindled by love.

A whiteness on my head whose light the full moon covets,

and before whose radiance the shining sun grows shy.

My hair blazed—indeed, it blazed magnificently,

as though the Pleiades were descending along its edges.

It has locks whose like the lions long for

when a dire calamity, like your desertion, frightens them.

Tresses that Time itself fears, for they

kill with the simplest means of inspiring awe.

The mirror tells me what I do not say:

it says that gray hair is death deferred.

A phantom of false illusion, spread as rumor by

people who rely on deceitful fancies.

My youth is the spirit's youth, and the spirit is an ember

ablaze, bearing death for whomever I choose.

In my gray years I fight Time with a strength

that is murderous Time itself—yet keener and deadlier.

Time shall know the severity of my ordeal and its own:

I am Time in meaning; it is but an interpreted word.
