You wrestle, in beauty's peace and war,

With dangers, some new and some age-old.

Ah, what a lovesick lover you are, besotted despite separation,

Whose sorrow eyes and cheeks have stirred.

Be sensible; do not despair—for how many a passion

Has the heart left behind, though stricken with love.

The Nile's maidens will heal the scars inflicted

On you by the Seine's maidens, when you return.

May God guard a noble lady in the cherished valley,

Who finds it painful to hear, 'He is far away.'

The late afternoons remind her of what was between us,

So her arms and breasts tremble.

I did her the wrong I did through love,

And left her to waste away in grief and perish.

And how many hopes of youth have had

Their twisted cords and knots severed by their misfortunes!

Will summer nights pass, with no relief for burning longing

From smiling mouths that pour forth sweet, pure water?

And will there go forth each morning, sorrowful and thirsty,

A heart reeling beneath the burdens of grief?

And will the Nile's haunts lack the revelry of a daredevil,

Who finds among their hills a paradise and immortality?

And will he live a captive of sorrow, in the bloom of youth—

A merry young man, wild with youth and rebellious?

The forgetful will remember me the day they are pricked

By dark traits in certain people.

The forgetful will remember me when they are awed

By kindnesses that bear witness to the memory of my love.

For, by God, I never surrendered my pledge to treachery,

Nor did ingratitude taint my soul in love.

Nor have the forgetful witnessed any crime of mine

Against love—unless being called a martyr counts.
