له مالٌ وليس له رشادٌ
متىwhen أغنىsufficed الثراءwealth عنin place of الرشادsound judgment
متى أغنى الثراء عن الرشاد
He has wealth, but he has no sound judgment.
When has wealth ever taken the place of sound judgment?
فإنfor if يكbe جيبهُhis pocket أضحىhas become غنيّاrich
فإن يك جيبهُ أضحى غنيّا
فماthen there is nothing فيin رأسهhis head غيرother than الكسادstagnation
فما في رأسه غير الكساد
For if his pocket has grown rich,
There is nothing in his head but stagnation.
