Between me and you lie hours that, however many,

will not keep us apart beyond midmorning on Sunday.

I spent two days in anguish and resentment,

saying: I shall be poetry's king the day after tomorrow.

When I see you yearning, with a thirst

for my nectar, I see sovereignty at my hand's command.

My pangs for you, which I wrestle with, never cease.

Try to escape, O gazelle, from the lion.

Yours are the sweet songs from my poetry and its rapture.

Yours are the draughts from my soul and from my body.

When I embrace you, the whole universe surges,

as winds surge in the heart of the singing nightingale.

    إني أعوذ بهذا الواحد الصمد

    I fear an ember in the cheek that tempts me;

indeed, I seek refuge in this One, the Self-Sufficient.
