You threaten me with betrayal—woe to you! Indeed, I

long for your betrayal; so tell me, will you betray me?

The nights have afflicted me in my love for you, yet I have not said:

“Farewell to beauty that charges and takes captive.”

    ويسكرني ذاك الجمال فأسكر

    It is reason that forbids me, so I listen for a moment;

and that beauty intoxicates me, so I grow drunk.

It is love that calls me to you with longing,

so I obey as one commanded, though I am one who commands.

Wonders of a cherished, pampered beauty,

whose lines are in the life of passion and glory.

A beauty with a victim every day,

and from his cheek this wine is pressed.

I shall return alone, with neither nectar nor love,

nor a flower whose breath I inhale alone.

I shall return, and the world says that I

am the slayer, slain by beauty and passion.
