You said in your call that you would be here

to comfort my soul after a few minutes.

So how, do you think, can my life endure, that I may gather

for all my passion, the spirits of those anemones?

Thousands of dreams circled about, then caressed

a captive heart, parched in spirit, enamored.

So no dream came true in loving you, nor was there an end,

despite despair, to the waves of pouring tears.

Are you, despite rejection and coyness, coming

to gladden one who longs and aid a lover?

Does life bestow someone like you upon a youth,

a devotee of love and longing, rough in disposition?

And how can I see my house, despite its narrow courtyard,

encompass the lord of the rising suns?

I shall meet you; shall I meet you in the guise of a lion

who counts kindness to gazelles among the grave wrongs?

Come: you will find me an ember of longing

blazing in a breast that yearns and inspires yearning.

For your whispered confidences I preserve my youth; so offer me

cups of love before the partings of my hair turn white.

And strengthen a heart that, if you wished, you would make

more unassailable than the eagle atop a lofty peak.

    فكن منقذي من جورها المتلاحق

    The world has indeed turned against me, shunned me, and drawn away;

so be my rescuer from its unremitting injustice.

If one day you are mine, even for part of an hour,

bestowing it with a willing beloved's generosity,

then I shall see the world, despite its vile oppression,

as the choicest delights of handsome youths at play.

Minutes, like years, have dragged on, and you have not come.

May the god of love protect you from every hindrance.

My longing for you will kill me; shall I see

your phantom at death, while it embraces me?

I love you as the heart loves revelation; so meet me,

even for an instant, that my lightning may pierce the unseen.

You kindled in my heart an upheaval never endured

by the ribs of one love-stricken, nor the breast of one enraged.

And you made me—may you never become like me—a warning

for everyone affectionate in spirit, rich in attachments.

So how long shall I cherish you, when I have never been

sure, even for a day, that you would keep the pledge?

I love you as the eye loves light; so guide me

to bear not seeing you, if you are true to me.

And have the seers among love's fellowship beheld

your equal in their imaginings and in reality?

Glory is yours among deceivers; so appoint me

judge of sorrow among truthful hearts.

I love you with a love that, if you imagined its blaze,

would leave you in crushing anguish born of sorrow.

    هو الدهر يرمى بالصروف الصواعق

    To God I complain of the burning grief I endure;

it is Time that hurls thunderbolt calamities.

To the creator of souls I complain of my affliction

with a soul treacherous in love and false in affection.

The phantoms of his memory keep me sleepless before dawn,

with dread like the horrors of night-assailing calamities.

What, then, is the fault? What is my fault? In love I am nothing

but a poet who creates truth in love.

The snares of the fair will be folded away, and extinguished

over time will be the fires of devastating sorrows.

And my song of love for you will remain a testament

recording the dreams of fluttering hearts.
